CD Projekt Red's Night City is the most detailed open world the studio has built and the subject of the most public reversal in recent memory. The 2020 launch was genuinely broken on last-generation consoles — refunds, delistings, an apology video — and the discourse around it hardened long before the game did. What exists now is substantially different software: the 2.0 update tore out and replaced perks, cyberware, police response and vehicle combat, and the Phantom Liberty expansion added a spy-thriller district with the best writing in the game. Underneath is a first-person RPG about V, a mercenary with a dead rockstar's personality corrupting their neural implant, which gives the main quest an actual clock and the ending choices real teeth. Night City itself remains the argument for playing it: six distinct districts stacked vertically, readable from any rooftop, densely voiced at street level. It is worth being clear that the launch criticism was accurate and that the current version is a different proposition.
