Larian's 2017 role-playing game is the one that convinced a generation of players that turn-based parties were not a dead format. You start as a Sourcerer imprisoned for a power the church treats as contagious, and escape into a world where almost every system can be attacked sideways. Combat runs on an elemental physics layer rather than a damage table: rain makes a floor conductive, blood is a surface you can freeze, poison clouds ignite, and a well-placed teleport is often more lethal than a spell. Armour is split into physical and magical pools that must be stripped before crowd control lands, which turns each fight into a targeting problem instead of an attrition one. Above that sits a genuinely reactive script - origin characters with their own agendas, four-player co-op where players can work against each other, and a habit of accepting solutions the designers did not obviously plan for. Larian's work here is the direct reason it was handed Baldur's Gate III, and much of that game's structure is visible in this one first.
