Klei's 2016 multiplayer version of Don't Starve keeps everything that made the original punishing and adds other people to make it worse in interesting ways. You are dropped into a procedurally generated wilderness with nothing, and the game explains none of its rules: what is edible, what happens at night, why your sanity is falling, and what the thing in the darkness does. Learning is done by dying, and a world is permanent, so a season-four base burning down in summer is simply what happened. Cooperation solves problems that are individually lethal - one player farms, one fights, one keeps the base from freezing - and the seasonal cycle forces long-term planning around winter, spring flooding and summer wildfires. Tim Burton-adjacent art and Wilson's paper-cutout animation give it a distinctive look that has not aged. Klei has supported it with free content for a decade, including boats, a second shard of the world underground, and character reworks. It remains one of the cleanest survival designs available, mostly because it refuses to help you.
