God of War (2018)
Santa Monica Studio's 2018 reboot moves Kratos from Greek myth to Norse, drops the fixed camera for a single unbroken shot that never cuts for the entire game, and hands him a son. Atreus is the reinvention: he shoots arrows you direct, translates the runes you cannot read, and gives the writers something Kratos never had, which is a reason to speak in a register other than rage. The Leviathan Axe is the other one. It freezes, it is thrown, and it returns on command with a controller jolt that made the recall the most imitated feel of its generation. Combat is tighter and more deliberate than the old combo strings, built around a small move set, parries and a camera pulled close enough that off-screen enemies are a real threat. The world is a hub of realms rather than a linear sequence, dense with optional bosses and a boat that fills its travel time with mythology. The PC version arrived in January 2022 with uncapped frame rates and DLSS.
