HoYoverse's 2023 role-playing game is the studio's turn-based counterweight to Genshin Impact, and it is considerably more interested in its own writing. You travel aboard the Astral Express to worlds in various states of collapse, and each is a self-contained arc with a distinct visual register - a frozen planet under martial law, a simulated ancient China, a Xianzhou fleet - told at length and with real jokes. Combat is turn-based with a speed-driven action order, weakness-break mechanics and team compositions built around seven Paths that function as roles, so party building is a puzzle about turn economy rather than raw damage. The Simulated Universe adds a roguelike mode with deckbuilding-style blessings that is substantial enough to be its own game. It is free-to-play with the usual gacha economy for characters and light cones, and generous by the standards of the category. Patches arrive on a six-week cadence, and the story is the reason most players stay.
