Insomniac's 2018 game solved the traversal problem that had defeated Spider-Man games for fifteen years. Webs attach to actual geometry, momentum carries through swings, and a wall-run into a point-launch into a zip-to-point chains together well enough that most players stop using fast travel entirely. Combat borrows the Arkham rhythm and adds verticality and gadgets - web-shooters, trip mines, an impact web that sticks a thug to a wall - so crowds are managed in the air rather than on the ground. The story is the other half: Peter is twenty-three, broke and eight years into the job, and the game splits its time between him, Mary Jane and Miles in sections that are quieter by design. Its Doctor Octopus is the best version of that character in any medium. The 2022 PC remaster adds ray-traced reflections, uncapped frame rates and ultrawide support, plus the three-part The City That Never Sleeps DLC.
