4A Games' 2014 rebuild of its 2010 shooter runs the original story on the sequel's engine, and it is the version to play. Adapted from Dmitry Glukhovsky's novel, it takes place in the Moscow metro two decades after a nuclear exchange, where stations are city-states and the tunnels between them are not safe. Its defining decision is scarcity: bullets are also currency, filters for your gas mask run on a real timer you can watch, and your flashlight needs hand-cranking. That turns surface excursions into genuine expeditions rather than levels. Redux adds two play styles - Spartan for a more conventional shooter and Survival for the original's punishing economy - so the game accommodates both. The atmosphere is the reason it has a following: stations rendered with an unusual amount of human detail, conversations you can stop and listen to, and a horror sensibility that leans on sound and darkness rather than jump scares. The morality system tracks small acts of decency and silently decides which ending you get.
