Capcom's 2023 remake had the hardest brief of the modern RE remakes: the 2005 original is widely held to be one of the best action games ever made, so there was no broken thing to fix. It rebuilt anyway. Leon can now move while aiming and parry with the knife, which sounds small and completely changes the combat rhythm - crowds that once had to be kited can be met head-on if you are willing to spend knife durability. The village, castle and island are substantially reworked rather than recreated shot for shot, with Ashley's escort sections rewritten into something nobody dreads and the merchant given side requests to fund. Ada's Separate Ways campaign followed as paid DLC, covering the same days from the other side. It sits alongside the RE2 remake as proof that Capcom's RE Engine pipeline is the most reliable in the industry, and it outsold the original within months of release.
