Respawn's 2023 sequel gives Cal Kestis five lightsaber stances - single, double-bladed, dual-wield, crossguard and blaster - two of which can be equipped at once and swapped mid-combo, which turns the previous game's competent Souls-adjacent combat into something with real expressive range. Koboh, the main planet, is a semi-open hub rather than a corridor, with a settlement that fills with characters you rescue, bounties, and a substantial amount of optional exploration built around a traversal kit that grows steadily. The story is noticeably darker than Fallen Order's and lands its ending, and the supporting cast, particularly Bode and Merrin, are given real material. The problem at launch was performance: the PC version stuttered badly enough to become the standard example of Unreal Engine 4 shader-compilation issues, and consoles struggled with the 60fps mode. Patched over the following year, it runs properly now. Mechanically it is the best Star Wars combat yet made.
