You crash into an ocean planet with a life pod, a fabricator and no weapons, and the game never gives you a gun. Unknown Worlds built survival around depth instead of combat: everything you need is further down, and going further down requires equipment you have to research, which requires materials from where you have already been. The result is a genuinely uncommon horror pressure — not monsters in corridors, but open water, failing light and a bar telling you how much air you have left. Its creatures are designed to be recognised at a distance and avoided, and several are among the most effective jump scares in games precisely because they are audible before they are visible. Base building is practical rather than decorative, since hull integrity depends on depth and reinforcement. There is a real story underneath the survival loop, told through abandoned wrecks and audio logs, and it resolves properly rather than trailing off. Note that this is the 2018 original, not the sequel currently in early access — and it is frequently cited as the best argument that survival crafting can carry a narrative.
