Aphelion Launches April 28 as Don't Nod Sends Two Astronauts to the Edge of the Solar System
Don't Nod is stepping outside its comfort zone. The studio behind Life is Strange and Lost Records: Bloom and Rage has spent over a decade building a reputation for emotionally grounded narrative games, but Aphelion is something different. It is a cinematic third-person action-adventure set on a frozen planet at the edge of the solar system, and it arrives on April 28 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with day-one availability on Xbox Game Pass. The premise drops you into 2060. Earth is no longer habitable. The European Space Agency has detected a ninth planet called Persephone at the far reaches of our solar system, and it may hold the key to humanity's survival. Two astronauts, Ariane Montclair and Thomas Cross, crash-land on its surface and must find each other while unraveling mysteries that no one expected to encounter this far from home. What makes Aphelion stand out from other sci-fi adventures is its dual-character structure. Players control both Ariane and Thomas, but their gameplay experiences are fundamentally different. Ariane handles the physical traversal — grappling, sliding, and momentum-driven parkour across alien terrain — while the injured Thomas relies on investigation, observation, and more measured puzzle-solving from a limited vantage point. ## Built With the European Space Agency Don't Nod partnered with the actual European Space Agency during development, grounding the game's science fiction in real astrophysics. The fictional planet Persephone is based on the hypothetical Planet Nine that astronomers have theorized exists beyond Neptune's orbit. Equipment, space suits, and mission protocols in the game reflect genuine ESA research, giving Aphelion a harder sci-fi edge than the studio's previous work. Aphelion frozen planet exploration That grounding extends to the storytelling. Ariane and Thomas share a complicated past that the game unfolds gradually as you play. Don't Nod has described their relationship as the emotional spine of the experience, and given the studio's track record with character-driven narratives, that is a promise worth taking seriously. ## Stealth, Traversal, and Something Lurking Aphelion is not just about exploration. The planet hosts a hostile lifeform, and several sequences require players to hide and move carefully to avoid detection. These stealth sections break up the traversal and puzzle-solving, adding tension to a game that might otherwise lean too heavily on atmosphere alone. Aphelion stealth gameplay The traversal toolkit includes a pathfinder device, oxygen management, and a grappling hook that enables the kind of fluid movement you would expect from a modern action-adventure. Ariane's sections look particularly kinetic in the gameplay trailers that have surfaced from events like the Convergence Games Showcase. ## Day One on Game Pass Aphelion is part of the Xbox Game Pass April Wave 2 lineup, which means Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers can play it at no additional cost starting April 28. It joins an already stacked month that includes Vampire Crawlers, Kiln, Final Fantasy V, and Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era. Aphelion alien landscape For Don't Nod, this is an important release. The studio has expanded its ambitions significantly since Life is Strange, and Aphelion represents its biggest departure yet — a full action-adventure with traversal mechanics, stealth, and a sci-fi setting rooted in genuine science. Whether the studio can nail the gameplay side as confidently as it handles narrative remains to be seen, but the ingredients are there for something special.

A beautiful, heartbreaking sci-fi story trapped inside a generation-old climbing game. Worth playing on Game Pass for the journey, even when the gameplay gets in its own way.
