Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold, the Patch 8.0 expansion, now has a firm release date: Tuesday, February 23, 2027. That is a few weeks later than the January 2027 window Square Enix gave when it revealed the expansion at Fan Festival 2026 in Anaheim. Pre-orders open on Wednesday, November 4, and pre-ordering gives you early access from Friday, February 19, 2027 at 1:00 a.m. PST, four days before full launch.
The dates at a glance
Square Enix confirmed the schedule on the Lodestone, FFXIV's official news hub, and on the updated Evercold website. There are three dates to note. Pre-orders start on November 4, so there is less than a week until you can lock in a copy. Early access starts on February 19, and full release follows on February 23. The Lodestone post gives no reason for the move from January. In practice the slip is small, but anyone who blocked out January for the launch will need to wait another month.
The site lists four products: a Standard Edition, a Digital Collector's Edition, a Collector's Box with physical goods, and a Collector's Bundle that pairs the expansion and its in-game items with the physical box. Pricing and the full list of pre-order bonuses were not on the official pages at the time of writing. Expect them when pre-orders go live next week.
Into the Fourth
Evercold opens a new story arc after Dawntrail. In FFXIV lore, the world was split into the Source and thirteen reflections long ago. With the Final Days averted, the Warrior of Light is now called to the Fourth reflection, a world swallowed by ice and threatened by something the story calls the Solstice. The official pitch is direct: the cost of past victories has come due, and the frozen Fourth is where that bill gets paid.

The most distinctive idea is where the new zones are. The Fourth's people live aboard four huge airships, each named for an element: Naglfar, the Realmship of Water; Hringhorni, the Realmship of Fire; Sessrymnir, the Realmship of Earth; and Skiðblaðnir, the Realmship of Wind. Two new cities, Fargarth and Hjartadunur, sit alongside them. The level cap rises from 100 to 110.
Two new jobs, both Evolved-only
Evercold adds two jobs. Bastion is a main tank that wields a skyltborg. Zephyr is a physical ranged DPS that fights with a crossbow. Both are new to FFXIV rather than familiar Final Fantasy jobs, and both can only be played in the new Evolved Mode.

That ties into the biggest mechanical change in the expansion. Combat splits into two modes. Reborn Mode keeps the current system. Evolved Mode is built to bring out each job's identity. You can switch between them, but the new jobs exist only in Evolved Mode, and limited jobs such as Blue Mage use neither. An Armoury update is also listed, aimed at players who play several jobs.
Seasons, auto-scaling and a freer story
Beyond the new jobs, Evercold changes how the game is structured. A new Seasons framework replaces the way rewards are earned and item level is raised. It comes with two gear tracks: Seasonal Adventure Gear for everyday play, and Raid Reward Gear for high-end players. In certain areas, auto content balancing will scale duties, field enemies and some rewards to your character's level. Players of different levels can then queue together without the usual syncing friction.
The main scenario also loosens up. After a certain point in the story, you pick the order in which you take on some areas, rather than following one fixed path.
Raids, dungeons and the Evangelion crossover
The endgame plan is large. A new eight-player raid series, Beyond the Lifestream, arrives with a new difficulty called Fierce, which sits between Normal and Savage. The alliance raid series is EVANGELION – Ghosts of Desire, the Neon Genesis Evangelion collaboration first teased at Fan Fest. Alliance raids will now be split into first and second halves, and their bosses will return as tougher eight-player encounters.

Also promised: a new Ultimate raid, new trials and dungeons, and a duty called the Gauntlet of Power, which pits you against up to five dungeon bosses in a row. The 8.x patch cycle will bring PvP actions for both new jobs and a new PvP Hall of the Novice where you learn by doing.
Quality-of-life changes, some of them free
Several of the most-requested changes are on the list. Character customisation gets a full colour picker, finer control over eyes and lips, more face paint, and removable parts on some gear. Action animations can now be customised. Chocobo companions get an overhauled raising system and can join you in dungeons. Any mount speed upgrade unlocked on one mount will apply to all of them. Housing gets resizable S/M/L interiors and a new furnishing UI over the 8.x patches.
Square Enix also confirms that some of this reaches players who do not buy Evercold. The broad game-design changes, the new battle system, the PvP and Duty Support updates, and the housing work are all listed as available without the expansion. The usual caveat applies: everything is still in development, and some content will arrive in later patches rather than at launch.
What to do now
For now, there is one date to watch: pre-orders on November 4, which should also bring prices and bonuses. If you want those four days of early access in February, that is when to buy. The rest of the wait is shorter than it sounds. February 23 is under four months away.
