GTA VI Pre-Download Starts November 10 on PS5, and You'll Need at Least 212GB Free

PS5 players who pre-order Grand Theft Auto VI digitally can pre-download it from November 10 at local midnight, nine days before the November 19 launch, and Sony says to clear a minimum of 212GB.

GTA VI Pre-Download Starts November 10 on PS5, and You'll Need at Least 212GB Free

Grand Theft Auto VI will start landing on PlayStation 5 consoles nine days before it can be played. Sony confirmed today that PS5 players who pre-order the game can begin pre-downloading it from November 10 at local midnight, ahead of the November 19 launch, and that they will need to clear a minimum of 212GB of free space to do it.

When the pre-download opens

The window opens at local midnight on November 10, so players in each region get access as their own clock ticks over rather than at one global moment. It applies only to digital pre-orders on PlayStation Store: if you have bought the game there, the download can sit on your console and wait for launch. Once November 19 arrives, the game unlocks and you can start playing straight away instead of waiting for the full install.

That nine-day lead is longer than the two or three days most big releases get. It is also a practical answer to a real problem. With a game this size and a launch audience this large, giving people more than a week to fetch the bulk of the data spreads the load across PlayStation Network and home connections alike, rather than piling millions of 200GB-plus downloads onto release night.

212GB is the number to plan around

Sony's own wording is that you should clear a minimum of 212GB, which is worth taking literally. Day-one updates routinely arrive on top of a pre-loaded build, and patches over the first weeks of a game's life tend to add rather than subtract. Leaving some headroom beyond 212GB is the safer plan.

For a sense of scale, that is roughly a third of the usable space on an original 825GB PS5, and around a quarter of what a 1TB PS5 model offers once the system software is accounted for. Anyone running a console already packed with other large games will likely need to make some decisions before November 10.

A few points that help:

Getting set up before launch

Sony's guidance lays out a simple checklist for anyone planning to play on day one. Make sure your PlayStation account exists and is signed in on the console, with up-to-date details, which matters most for players new to PlayStation who may be buying a PS5 specifically for this release. Then pre-order through PlayStation Store or a participating retailer, and clear the storage needed for the pre-download.

Only a digital pre-order on PlayStation Store makes the November 10 pre-load possible. Players buying a physical copy will still be installing from the disc and downloading any required update on or after launch day, so they should still budget the same storage.

The editions

Grand Theft Auto VI is available to pre-order in a Standard Edition and an Ultimate Edition, priced at $79.99 and $99.99 respectively in the US. The Ultimate Edition adds a collection of premium vehicles, weapons and clothing, along with extra content threaded through Jason and Lucia's story, the two leads whose partnership drives the game's crime saga across the state of Leonida and its Vice City setting.

Where things stand

The pre-download date is the latest step in a long run of confirmations as the release approaches. Rockstar's launch trailer arrived in mid-October, and the game's original score by Justice is due on December 11, a few weeks after the game itself. Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Sony says more details will follow closer to launch. For PS5 players, the plan for now is straightforward: pre-order digitally if you want the early download, make room for at least 212GB, and be ready when the clock strikes midnight on November 10.
