Switch 2 owners who have been waiting to see how Monster Hunter Wilds holds up on Nintendo's hardware will not have to take anyone's word for it. Capcom has confirmed that a free Prologue Demo arrives on the Nintendo eShop on October 19 in the Americas and October 20 in Europe, giving players the opening stretch of the story roughly six weeks before the full game launches on December 4. Digital pre-orders for the Switch 2 version open on the same day.
What the Prologue Demo includes
The demo covers the beginning of the campaign: character creation, the first steps into the Forbidden Lands, and the early hunts that introduce the game's systems. Capcom's own announcement frames it as a chance to "experience the start of your adventure", and the key detail is that progress is not throwaway. Save data from the demo carries over to the full game, so anything you build in the character creator and any time you put into those opening hours comes with you on December 4.
That makes the demo a lower-risk proposition than most. If the performance on Switch 2 suits you, there is nothing to replay; if it does not, you have lost nothing but a download. For a game whose PC version drew plenty of discussion about hardware demands at launch, letting Switch 2 players judge the port with their own eyes is a sensible move on Capcom's part.

Local play, but no online multiplayer
The Switch 2 demo supports local wireless play, so friends with their own consoles and their own copy of the demo can hunt together in the same room. Capcom's promotional image shows four Switch 2 systems linked for a group hunt, which is a reminder of how much of the series' early popularity was built on handheld multiplayer.
Online multiplayer is not available in the demo. That is in line with how Capcom has handled prologue demos before, where the goal is a contained taste of the opening rather than a full test of the netcode. Anyone hoping to check how online sessions perform on the new hardware will have to wait for the full release.
Pre-orders open the same day
Capcom is pairing the demo with the start of digital pre-orders on the Nintendo eShop, so the moment the demo goes live is also the moment you can commit to the full game. Capcom announced the Switch 2 version's December 4 release date in September, alongside its edition lineup and an introductory price for early digital buyers, and the store listing that goes live on October 19 is where those details will be locked in.
The timing is deliberate. Releasing the demo and pre-orders together lets players try the game, decide, and buy in one sitting, and the carry-over save means there is no penalty for starting immediately.

Where Wilds stands now
Monster Hunter Wilds launched on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and Capcom has kept it busy since with free title updates, new monsters and event quests. The Switch 2 version arrives as a full release of the base game rather than a cut-down edition, and it lands at a point where the game has had a long run of post-launch support.
Capcom's attention is also turning to Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, the master-rank expansion due in 2027. Ascendance adds new regions, the Boost Bracer system with its enhanced attacks for every weapon type, and returning monsters such as the elder dragon Teostra and Khezu. For Switch 2 players, picking up the base game this winter puts them in position for that expansion when it arrives.
The same Prologue Demo format already exists on the other platforms, which gives the Switch 2 version a familiar shape: a self-contained, offline slice of the opening that hands its progress to the full game.

The key dates
The Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo goes live on the Nintendo eShop on October 19 Pacific time, which is October 20 in the UK and Europe. Digital pre-orders open the same day. The full game launches on Switch 2 on December 4, 2026, and the Ascendance expansion follows in 2027. The demo is free, includes local multiplayer, and its save file transfers to the full game.
