Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced an all-black version of its Japan-only PS5 Digital Edition. The PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black (Console Language: Japanese Only) goes on sale in Japan on Thursday, November 19, 2026, priced at 55,000 yen including tax, and a matching Midnight Black disc drive launches the same day for 11,980 yen. Pre-orders open at PlayStation retailers and online stores across Japan from Tuesday, October 20.
Same Japan-only rules as before
This is a new colour for a model Sony already sells, not a new kind of console. Like the existing white Japan-only Digital Edition, the Midnight Black unit is locked to the Japanese market: the system language is fixed to Japanese, and it only works with PlayStation accounts whose country or region is set to Japan. That restriction is the trade-off for the price. At 55,000 yen it sits well below what Sony charges for the standard, region-free Digital Edition in Japan, which is exactly why the company fences it off from import buyers and resellers.
So if you live outside Japan and were hoping to pick one up for the colour, this is not that console. Sony has not announced a Midnight Black Digital Edition for any other region alongside it.

What is inside
Apart from the paint job and the region lock, the hardware is the familiar slim Digital Edition. The model number is CFI-2200B02S. It has 825GB of internal SSD storage, an M.2 slot for expansion, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, and the usual pair of rear USB-A ports plus two USB-C ports on the front. Backward compatibility with PS4 games, 3D audio, and the DualSense controller's haptic feedback and adaptive triggers are all intact.
The box includes the console, one DualSense controller in Midnight Black, two feet for horizontal placement, an HDMI cable, a power cord, a USB cable, and Astro's Playroom pre-installed. The vertical stand is sold separately, which is worth knowing because Sony's own product shots show the console standing upright on one.

A black disc drive to match
Because this is a Digital Edition, it has no disc drive. Players who still buy physical games can add the detachable drive, and Sony is releasing a Midnight Black version of it (model CFI-ZDD1J01) that matches the console. It comes with a black cover piece and a long foot for horizontal setups. Pairing the drive with a console requires an internet connection.
Sony has paired the console with existing Midnight Black accessories in its messaging, pointing to the PlayStation Portal remote player in the same finish. The pitch is a fully matching black setup.

The disc deadline is still on
The announcement also repeats Sony's plan to stop selling new PlayStation games on disc. Sony Interactive Entertainment says PlayStation games released from January 2028 onward will only be sold as downloads through PlayStation Store and other retailers. Disc versions of games released before then will keep working. Selling a matching disc drive while that deadline approaches is less contradictory than it sounds: there will be a large library of physical PS4 and PS5 games around for years, and the drive is how a Digital Edition owner plays them.
Timed for a busy November
The release date is not an accident. November 12 marks five years since the original PS5 launched in Japan, and November 19 is the day Grand Theft Auto VI arrives, which Sony names directly in its announcement. The company also lists Gundam Rogue Orbit, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance and its own God of War Laufey among the games coming up, alongside MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls and Marvel's Wolverine, which are already out.
Launching a cheaper, better-looking console on the same day as the biggest release of the year is a straightforward bet that a lot of people in Japan will be buying their first PS5, or replacing an old one, that week. Pre-orders begin on October 20, and Sony says they will open in stages across retailers, so availability may vary by store.
