RuneScape Reignited Is Cancelled, but the December 2 Free Trial Opens Up to Everyone

Jagex has cancelled RuneScape Reignited, the fresh-start mode with its own economy, after fan backlash. December 2 still brings the Adventure Guide, a Remastered Journey and a 10-day free members' trial for new and lapsed players.

RuneScape Reignited Is Cancelled, but the December 2 Free Trial Opens Up to Everyone

RuneScape Reignited will not launch. Twelve days after unveiling it on stage at RuneFest 2026, Jagex has cancelled the fresh-start character type outright. In a video and written statement posted to the official RuneScape news page, Mod Ryan said the studio had "missed the mark" and would not move forward with it. The December 2 date is still happening, though. It becomes a broader relaunch for the main game, with a 10-day free members' trial that's now open to new and lapsed players instead of being tied to Reignited characters.

What Reignited was supposed to be

Jagex revealed Reignited at its RuneFest Summit on October 3 as a new permanent character type. Reignited characters would have shared worlds, chat and clans with everyone else, but they'd have been walled off economically, with their own Grand Exchange, their own hiscores, split boss instances and no trading with existing characters, which Jagex called Veterans. The idea was a market free of 25 years of inflation, plus a reset of every world-first achievement through a new Hall of Legends.

That split economy is what sank it. The announcement drew a lot of pushback from the existing player base, and Jagex responded with two follow-up posts, "Reignited: Where We Go From Here" on October 6 and an end-of-week update on October 9. The October 15 statement is the end of that process. Jagex isn't scaling the mode back or reworking it. It's gone.

Why Jagex pulled it

Mod Ryan's reasoning goes straight to the most painful chapter in the game's history. He pointed to the last time Jagex ignored player feedback, when the combat overhaul changed RuneScape for good and took the studio over a decade to recover from. Having promised on stage not to repeat the mistakes of the past, he said, the team chose to cancel instead of pushing ahead with a mode a large part of its community didn't want.

The statement also sets out what Jagex still wants: growth from returning and new players, but never at the expense of the people already playing. It's an unusually fast and unusually complete reversal for a live-service game. Most studios that announce a contested system soften it in later patches. Jagex dropped this one before a single Reignited character existed.

Jagex's updated October calendar. The Reignited community slot for the week of October 12 is now crossed out, and RS Plugins holds the week of October 19.

December 2 still happens, just differently

The date Jagex originally set for Reignited is now a general "Return to RuneScape" moment. On December 2 the game gets the new Adventure Guide and the first part of the Remastered Journey, a rework of the early-game experience, along with a batch of other improvements that Mod Ryan said the community had been asking for over the past week.

The free trial survives too, with broader eligibility. From December 2 to December 12, new characters and any existing character that hasn't had membership since June 2, 2026 can play RuneScape's members' worlds and content without paying. No purchase or subscription is needed. Jagex says exact start and end times are still to be confirmed. The trial doesn't cover Old School RuneScape's members' worlds, and characters that have held membership since June 2 aren't eligible.

The practical difference for anyone who planned to come back for Reignited is that there's no separate economy to start fresh in. Returning players jump into the existing game, alongside everyone else, on the same Grand Exchange.

The 2027 roadmap, which Jagex says got lost in the Reignited debate. The December 2 column now shows a general return-to-RuneScape trial with no separate character type.

The 2027 roadmap stays as announced

Mod Ryan argued that the Reignited debate overshadowed the rest of RuneFest, and the published roadmap for 2027 is unchanged. Winter brings Hoard of Dragons, with Grandmaster Clue Scrolls, an Agility rework and a Dragon Slayer II master quest. Spring's City of Gnomes adds Argento, a community skilling boss, a grandmaster quest called The Curse of Arposandra, and a Glouphrie solo boss. Autumn's Secrets of Karamja is headlined by a raid, Temple of Ah Za Rhoon.

Underneath all of it, the "Road to Restoration" work continues. That's Jagex's ongoing clean-up programme, and the roadmap lists a unified collection log, clan finder improvements, a grouping system rework, a quest timeline rework and rebalances. Mod Ryan described the closing of decade-old storylines and the return of a proper grandmaster quest as the core of the year.

Plugins land on Monday

The statement ended with one more firm date. RuneScape's official plugins launch on Monday, October 19. They follow the API Plugin Hub beta that opened on October 6, and Jagex says it'll share more details on launch day. With Reignited gone, plugins and the December 2 relaunch are now the two milestones the studio is pointing players toward for the rest of 2026.

RS4, the separate Unreal Engine RuneScape MMO that Jagex teased at the same RuneFest, wasn't mentioned in the cancellation and still has no date beyond being a few years out.
