Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is one week from launch, and the first players are already in. Campaign Early Access for digital pre-orders begins today, October 16, ahead of the full release on October 23 across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. At the same time, Activision has confirmed the detail Xbox subscribers have been waiting on: Modern Warfare 4 launches as a standalone purchase and will not join Game Pass until Holiday 2027.
Campaign Early Access starts today
Anyone holding a digital pre-order of any edition gets two early windows. The campaign opens first, from today, and DMZ, the returning extraction mode, follows on October 20. That leaves multiplayer as the only part of the package held back for the October 23 launch itself.
Activision's own fine print notes that actual play time is subject to time zone differences and possible outages, so the exact unlock will vary by region and platform. On Steam, the store page currently lists the release as October 22, which reflects the US evening rollover of a global October 23 launch rather than an earlier date. The standard edition is listed at $69.99.
The campaign is the most story-heavy part of the package, and the week of early access is a sensible way to get through it before the multiplayer crowds arrive. Infinity Ward has set it on the Korean peninsula, and the trailers so far have leaned on night raids, burning streets and close-quarters infantry work.

What the pre-order includes
Beyond the two early access windows, a digital pre-order adds the Hunter Killer Operator skin and the Gilded Pearl camo pack. Every digital edition also carries the Inner Circuit M4 weapon blueprint. On Xbox consoles, that blueprint gets an OG green translucent finish as a nod to 25 years of Xbox.
Xbox players can pre-order through the Xbox Store on console, the Xbox app on PC or the Microsoft Store. Because early access is tied to digital pre-orders, players buying a boxed copy should not expect to jump in today.
No Game Pass until Holiday 2027
The bigger headline for Xbox players is the subscription question. Activision says Modern Warfare 4 launches as a standalone release: to play it at launch, you have to buy it, and it will not be included with Game Pass until Holiday 2027. That is roughly a year after release, and it puts a firm date on a policy that has been taking shape since spring, when Game Pass Ultimate's price came down and day-one Call of Duty was dropped from the subscription.
It is a sharp change from the last two years, when Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 arrived on Game Pass on day one. For players who budgeted around the subscription, Modern Warfare 4 is now a full-price purchase or a long wait.

What Game Pass Ultimate keeps
Subscribers are not left with nothing. Activision confirms that Game Pass Ultimate members keep access to the legacy entries already in the library: Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III. Anyone who wants to stay in the series without paying for Modern Warfare 4 at launch still has three recent games to play.
The trade-off is plain. Black Ops 7 and its seasons stay on the subscription, but the new Modern Warfare, its campaign, its multiplayer launch maps and its DMZ mode all sit behind a separate purchase for at least the next year.
The road to October 23
From here the schedule is simple. The campaign is open to digital pre-order holders from today. DMZ opens to the same group on October 20, giving extraction players three days to learn the Hajin map, its bounties and its base-building before the wider launch. Then on October 23 the full game, multiplayer included, opens to everyone who owns it on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Switch 2.

For anyone undecided, the early access windows are effectively a week-long head start rather than a trial: they only come with a pre-order. And for Xbox players weighing whether to wait for the subscription, the answer is now on the record: Holiday 2027.
