Battlefield has done licensed crossovers before and they have mostly been cosmetic. This one is not. On August 18, Battlefield 6 and REDSEC get Top Gun: Carrier Strike - a Season 4 drop built around a new game mode, two returning real-world airframes, and three characters from the films voiced by the actors who played them.
And for one week, the whole thing is free.
Carrier Strike is the actual headline
The new mode blends naval, air and ground combat into a single objective: destroy the enemy carrier. That is a structure Battlefield has flirted with for years without ever fully committing to, and pairing it with the return of Wake Island - the series' most famous island map, back in the rotation - is about as on-the-nose as DICE could have made the pitch.
REDSEC, the free battle royale side of the package, gets its own aviation mode in Gauntlet: Fighter Sweep.

The F-14 is back
Two aircraft anchor the crossover: the F-14 Tomcat and the F/A-18 Super Hornet, the two jets the films are built around. The Tomcat is a two-seat fighter, which means a pilot and a back-seat weapons officer sharing an airframe - a cooperative dynamic Battlefield has not leaned on this hard in a long while, and one that makes the squad side of the mode considerably more interesting than one person flying while everyone else watches.
The film characters are the part that could have been throwaway and is not. Lt. Bradley 'Rooster' Bradshaw, Lt. Robert 'Bob' Floyd and Adm. Solomon 'Warlock' Bates are all playable, voiced by Miles Teller, Lewis Pullman and Charles Parnell respectively. Hiring the original cast for a licensed skin pack is not the cheap option.

A free week, and it keeps what you earn
From August 18 through August 25, Battlefield 6 is playable free. The trial covers six modes - Top Gun: Carrier Strike, Conquest, Breakthrough, Escalation and Casual Breakthrough among them - across four maps: Wake Island, Tsuru Reef, Cairo Bazaar and Hagental Base.
The catch is small but worth knowing: you access the trial by downloading Battlefield REDSEC, the free-to-play component, on PC, PS5 or Xbox Series X|S rather than by grabbing a separate trial client. Everything you unlock during the week carries over permanently if you buy the full game afterwards.
Timing that is not an accident
Battlefield 6 has been climbing back toward a five-month player-count high going into this update, and EA is dropping a free week and its biggest licensed tie-in on the same day, one week before Gamescom opens. Whether Carrier Strike survives as a permanent mode past the crossover window is the open question - the F-14 and the film cast almost certainly will not.
Top Gun: Carrier Strike goes live August 18 in Battlefield 6 and Battlefield REDSEC on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
