Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World details Quick Scouting, Scout Run and Joint Battles

Square Enix has detailed battle-free Quick Scouting, a rare-monster Scout Run, two-party Joint Battles against giant bosses with four-player online support, and the priestess Almira ahead of the December 3 launch.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World details Quick Scouting, Scout Run and Joint Battles

Square Enix and TOSE have pulled back the curtain on several of the systems that will define Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, the next entry in the long-running monster-wrangling spin-off. The new details cover a way to recruit monsters without ever starting a fight, a paddock full of rare creatures you can only reach late in the story, a new style of boss battle built around two parties fighting side by side, and a fresh character tied to the mystery at the heart of the game. The Withered World launches on December 3, 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam, and a free demo is available now on every platform.

Quick Scouting: recruitment without the battle

Recruiting monsters in past Dragon Quest Monsters games meant fighting them first and hoping your scouting attempt landed. Quick Scouting cuts that step out. While exploring, you can throw a hunk of meat at a wild monster, and if it takes the bait it can join your team with no battle at all. Meat comes in different grades, and the better the cut, the better your odds. Some monsters are pickier than others and prefer unusual varieties, so building up a pantry of different meats becomes part of the hunt for particular creatures.

It is a small change on paper, but in a series where filling out the monster roster is the whole point, removing the fight from every single recruitment should make collecting feel a lot quicker, especially for low-ranked monsters you only want as synthesis fodder. The existing battle-based scouting still sits alongside it, so players who enjoy the old way lose nothing.

Scout Run: a paddock of rare monsters

Quick Scouting also unlocks a dedicated space later in the adventure. The Scout Run opens up at Witherwood, the paddock that acts as the game's hub, and it is stocked with rare monsters you will not find anywhere in the wild. On entering, you are handed Scouty Snacks to throw, and the monsters in the enclosure can only be recruited through Quick Scouting. Square Enix says new monsters will appear in the Scout Run as the story progresses, so it is designed to be a place you return to rather than a one-off visit.

For completionists, that makes the Scout Run the likely home of some of the harder-to-find entries in the monster list. It also gives the new recruitment system a clear purpose beyond convenience: some creatures are simply gated behind it.

Joint Battles: two parties, one giant foe

The biggest new system is Joint Battles, a fight format built around massive monsters that are too strong for one team of wranglers to handle alone. The Withered World stars two protagonists, Bianca and Nera, and in a Joint Battle their parties fight together. Whichever heroine you are playing as commands the main party while the other handles the reserves. Each side's monsters draw on a combined HP gauge and a combined MP gauge, so resources are pooled rather than tracked monster by monster.

These giant enemies come with what the game calls Pet Hates: specific actions that irritate them. Triggering a Pet Hate fills the boss's Rage Gauge, and once it is angry enough it switches to stronger attacks. When the rage burns out, the monster becomes exhausted and briefly cannot move, opening a window for both parties to pile on damage. That gives the fights a rhythm to manage: provoke carefully, weather the storm, then punish the recovery.

Joint Battles are not limited to single player either. The mode supports up to four players online, and clearing one within ten rounds earns extra prizes, which points to it being a repeatable co-op challenge for the post-game as well as a story feature.

Battles show every monster's HP and MP at a glance, which matters once Joint Battles pool them into shared gauges.

Almira and the fall of Witherwood

Square Enix also introduced Almira, a priestess who once guarded Witherwood and served the two Archeagles, the guardian birds that protected the region. When the Evil Eye descended from the heavens, the Archeagles vanished and Almira disappeared with them. Her story looks set to tie directly into the blight that gives the game its name. In the English version she is voiced by Grace Saif.

New monsters join the roster

Three more monsters were confirmed alongside the systems reveal. Hammerhood Honcho is a beast-family monster, See Slug is a nature-family creature with the Bottom Feeder talent that teaches water-elemental abilities, and Panda Pilgrim is another beast-family addition that walks with a staff. They join the many familiar faces from across the Dragon Quest series that fill out the game's roster, all of which can be raised and fed into synthesis to create new monsters.

Synthesis remains the heart of the series: fuse two monsters and a new, stronger creature emerges.

Release date, editions and the demo

The Withered World arrives on December 3, 2026. The Digital Deluxe Edition adds a four-item DLC set, including the Mega Mole Hole, Monster Marathons, a Metallic Ring and a Scout Run VIP Card, plus 48 hours of early access starting December 1. Buying either version before January 5, 2027 also nets an Adventure Starter Set of items.

The free demo covers the story from the very start up to the conclusion of the opening Witherwood events, and it already includes Quick Scouting and synthesis. Only rank G and rank F monsters can be befriended in it, but up to eight monsters from your main party and reserves carry over into the full game, as long as you play both on the same platform and account. Transferred monsters start at level 1 with their default talents, and items and gold stay behind.
