FFXIV: Evercold Revealed at Fan Fest 2026 — January 2027 Expansion Brings Switch 2 Version and an Evangelion Crossover

Square Enix dropped FFXIV's next expansion at Fan Fest 2026: Evercold launches January 2027, kicking off the Godless Realms Saga with a full combat overhaul, two original jobs, a Switch 2 version this August, and a Neon Genesis Evangelion alliance raid called Ghosts of Desire. Patch 7.5 ships April 28.

FFXIV: Evercold Revealed at Fan Fest 2026 — January 2027 Expansion Brings Switch 2 Version and an Evangelion Crossover

Square Enix used the Anaheim opening keynote of Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2026 to drop the bombshell players have been waiting for. Producer and director Naoki Yoshida unveiled Evercold, the long-rumored Patch 8.0 expansion, with a teaser trailer that kicks off an entirely new long-form story arc dubbed the Godless Realms Saga. The expansion is set to launch in January 2027, but the announcements that followed make the next nine months one of the busiest stretches FFXIV has ever had.

Yoshida framed Evercold as a deliberate hard reset for veterans without leaving newcomers behind. The Warrior of Light is hurled into The Fourth — one of the thirteen reflections of the Source — a frozen mirror of Eorzea where civilizations have collapsed and gods have gone silent. Two new jobs were teased: a tank and a physical ranged DPS, both originals to FFXIV rather than ports from other Final Fantasy entries. That break from tradition has already lit up the community, especially after the Pictomancer reception on Dawntrail.

A combat overhaul that nobody saw coming

The biggest mechanical change is an unprecedented battle system overhaul. Yoshida confirmed two parallel modes shipping at launch: Reborn Mode, which preserves Dawntrail's job feel for players who want continuity, and Evolved Mode, a from-scratch rebuild that puts heavier emphasis on individual job identity, resource management, and procs. Both modes will receive balance attention, but Yoshida hinted Evolved is where future job design will live long-term.

Switch 2 launch and an Evangelion raid

Two days of keynote announcements rounded out the surprises. A native Switch 2 version of FFXIV is coming in August 2026, with an early access window before launch — that drops the entry barrier dramatically for the millions of new Switch 2 owners and gives Square Enix a console-handheld pipeline ahead of Evercold. Then came the curveball: the next 24-player Alliance Raid series, titled Ghosts of Desire, is a full collaboration with Hideaki Anno's Neon Genesis Evangelion. Concept art shown during the keynote teased Eva Unit-01 silhouettes against Allagan ruins.

Patch 7.5 lands first, on April 28

Before any of that, Patch 7.5 — Trail to the Heavens — drops on April 28, closing out the Dawntrail story, ending the Echoes of Vana'diel alliance raid, adding a new dungeon and Ultimate, and introducing the Beastmaster limited job. Yoshida also confirmed a staggered rollout, with 7.5 Part 2 arriving in early September.

For an MMO that just shipped what many considered its most divisive expansion, FFXIV's roadmap suddenly looks ambitious in a way it hasn't since Endwalker. The next nine months will tell whether Yoshida can land all of this without the live team breaking.
