God of War Laufey Is Delayed to May 20, 2027, as Santa Monica Studio Takes More Time for Polish

Santa Monica Studio has pushed God of War Laufey from February 16 to May 20, 2027, saying the extra three months will go into finishing touches. The game remains a PS5 exclusive.

God of War Laufey Is Delayed to May 20, 2027, as Santa Monica Studio Takes More Time for Polish

God of War Laufey will not make its February date. Santa Monica Studio announced on November 4 that the PS5 exclusive has moved from Tuesday, February 16, 2027 to Thursday, May 20, 2027. That pushes Faye's journey through the Everywhen back by 93 days, a little over three months, and lands the game in late spring instead of the quieter post-holiday window it had claimed when pre-orders opened in September.

What Santa Monica Studio said

The news came as a short signed statement posted to the studio's official X account rather than through a trailer or a PlayStation Blog post. The studio opens by thanking players for the reaction since the June State of Play reveal, and says it does not take for granted the trust fans have placed in it to deliver something worthy of that excitement. "With this in mind," it writes, "we've made the decision to delay God of War Laufey's release to May 20th, 2027."

The reason given is a familiar one: more time for polish. The studio says it will spend the extra months "putting in the finishing touches and pushing the game to its fullest potential," and promises to return with more updates soon. There is no mention of a specific technical problem, no change to the platform (it remains a PS5 exclusive), and no word on whether any of the game's content or features has changed. Read plainly, it is a late-stage polish delay for a game that is already well into production, not a sign of a project in trouble.

Laufey begins where the 2018 game did: at Faye's funeral, with Kratos and Atreus at her pyre. Captured on PS5 Pro.

Where Laufey fits in the series

For anyone who has not followed it since June, God of War Laufey is a significant swerve for the series. Instead of Kratos, you play as Laufey, better known as Faye: Kratos' late wife and Atreus' mother, whose death set the entire Norse saga in motion. After her own funeral she wakes in the Everywhen, a realm where all magic originates and returns and where gods and creatures from several mythologies cross paths. Learning that the plans she made to protect her family are now in danger, she fights her way back toward them.

Deborah Ann Woll voices Faye, with Jack Quaid as Phranque, the talking cube that travels with her, and Perlina Lau as Rue. Ariel Lawrence is directing, and Cory Barlog, who directed the 2018 reboot, is head of creative. Combat is pitched as faster and more aerial than Kratos' games, built around a momentum-driven magical sword, soul-siphoning magic and the Serpent Bow, which can stack up to five arrows into a single charged volley or spray them at close range from the hip.

What it means if you have pre-ordered

Pre-orders opened on September 29, so many players already have a copy reserved. The announcement does not mention any change to the editions. The standard pre-order bonus (the Last Wish Armor Set, the Phranque Golden Leaves appearance and a resource pack) and the Digital Deluxe Edition's Dark Alchemy set, mini artbook and soundtrack should all simply arrive on the new date. Digital pre-orders on PlayStation Store normally update to a revised release date on their own, so there is nothing you need to do to keep your order. If the new date no longer suits you, check the cancellation terms of the store you ordered from.

The separate Collector Box is worth a mention here, because it does not include the game at all. It contains a light-up Faye statue, a 51-card oracle deck and a mini artbook, and you have to buy the game separately. Sony has not said whether its shipping schedule moves with the game, so anyone who ordered one should watch for a notice from their retailer.

The Collector Box ships without the game itself, so it is a separate order from your copy of Laufey.

A familiar move for Santa Monica

Delays are nothing new for this studio. God of War Ragnarök was pushed out of 2021 and released in November 2022, and it arrived in good shape. A three-month slip announced more than three months ahead of the original date fits the same pattern: the game's structure is in place and the extra time goes into tuning and bug fixing, not rebuilding.

The timing also gets Laufey out of a crowded early 2027. February 2027 is already crowded, with remakes and expansions stacked across the month, and May gives one of Sony's biggest first-party releases of 2027 a cleaner run at the spotlight. The studio has promised more updates soon, and the next one is likely to show more of the story and the Everywhen itself. Until then, the new date is the one to remember: God of War Laufey launches May 20, 2027, exclusively on PS5.
