Firefly Studios has pushed Stronghold 4 back by more than four months. The castle-building strategy sequel was due in Steam Early Access on December 7. It will now launch on April 20, 2027, and the studio says the extra time will make the Early Access version bigger as well as more polished. Firefly announced the change today on the game's Steam page. The new date is already on the store listing.
Why Firefly moved the date
Firefly says it always wanted Stronghold 4 to enter Early Access with as much finished content as possible. The studio describes the demo as one of the most-played of the entire Steam Next Fest, and that response seems to have shaped the decision. Firefly wants the Early Access build to be complete enough that player feedback can go straight into the work on version 1.0, without the first months being spent filling gaps.
That is a fairly common reason for an Early Access delay, but the effect here is concrete. Firefly is not just buying time for bug fixing. It is adding a whole mode that was not in the December plan.

What the April 20 Early Access build now includes
According to Firefly, everything planned for December is still coming on April 20:
- A full story campaign. It is a prequel set in medieval England, the series' original home, and follows Penryn, a shepherd whose quiet life is torn apart.
- Custom Skirmish mode, where you build up and fight AI lords.
- A Skirmish Trail, a linked series of skirmish challenges.
- Free Build, for players who want to build a castle and an economy without anyone attacking them.
The delay adds three things on top of that:
- An economic campaign. Stronghold fans have long valued the series' economy-focused missions, and this one is now in the Early Access launch.
- Quality-of-life improvements based on demo feedback.
- Additional polish across the game.
Firefly also says the extra months give it room to properly show off what is new in this entry: medieval siegecraft, villages that grow around your castle, and weather that affects how you play.
Back to the roots of the series
Stronghold 4 was revealed at the PC Gaming Show earlier this year. It is Firefly's attempt to take the series back to what made the 2001 original stick: building a working castle economy in medieval England, then watching that castle hold or fall under siege. The game runs on Unreal Engine 5, a big technical jump for a series whose recent entries have mostly been remasters and spin-offs. The world is simulated so that rival lords, bandits and the seasons all put pressure on your granaries and your walls.

The campaign is set long before the events of the original Stronghold. It follows Penryn as he goes from tending sheep to fighting for his life against bandits, rival nobles and the elements. Firefly has kept most of the plot back for now, and the April date pushes the full reveal of that story further out too.
The demo is still live
If the wait feels long, the Stronghold 4 demo is still free on Steam. Its most recent update added Skirmish mode alongside Free Build: you fight a deathmatch against three AI opponents, Penryn himself plus series favourites The Snake and Sir Longarm. Firefly is asking demo players to keep sending feedback, which it says will help shape the game ahead of both the Early Access launch and 1.0.

Platforms and what is next
Stronghold 4 is a PC game on Steam, and Early Access starts on April 20, 2027. Firefly has not announced a price or a date for version 1.0. Its plan is to gather feedback from the fuller Early Access build and work toward a complete release after that. If you had the game wishlisted for December, the date on the store has already changed, and nothing else is needed.
