Sega Universe Will Revive OutRun, NiGHTS, Streets of Rage, and More Under ‘No Old, Stay Gold’ Banner

Sega launches the transmedia Sega Universe initiative to revive classic franchises including OutRun, NiGHTS, Streets of Rage, and Sakura Wars — expanding them into games, film, music, and fashion.

Sega Universe Will Revive OutRun, NiGHTS, Streets of Rage, and More Under ‘No Old, Stay Gold’ Banner

Sega has officially unveiled “Sega Universe,” an ambitious transmedia initiative designed to breathe new life into the company’s beloved classic franchises. Announced on April 24 under the slogan “No Old, Stay Gold,” the project signals Sega’s intention to expand its legacy intellectual properties beyond games and into film, music, fashion, and other forms of entertainment.

The first phase of Sega Universe highlights nine titles celebrating major anniversaries in 2026, featuring some of the most iconic names in gaming history. OutRun, Streets of Rage, NiGHTS into Dreams, Guardian Heroes, Sakura Wars, Fantasy Zone, Dynamite Deka, and the cult classic SEGAGAGA are all part of the initial lineup. Each franchise is being positioned for new projects that honor the originals while introducing them to modern audiences.

The initiative is largely spearheaded by Justin Scarpone, a former Disney executive who joined Sega in 2024 as the company’s global head of transmedia. Scarpone was tasked with replicating the massive cross-platform success of the Sonic the Hedgehog brand — which has generated billions through games, films, and merchandise — across Sega’s other legacy properties like Persona and Like a Dragon. He has described the legacy IP portfolio as the company’s “most fascinating undertaking.”

Sega’s official statement outlines a clear vision: the company plans to “shine a light on classic titles that are still loved by fans, are distinct from current titles, and aim to transcend the world of games by delivering new ways to enjoy them.” The goal is to create “nostalgic yet new entertainment content” that respects the DNA of the originals while applying quality-of-life updates for today’s audiences.

For fans who’ve been waiting decades for a new NiGHTS game or a proper OutRun revival, this announcement is exactly the kind of signal they’ve been hoping for. While Sega hasn’t confirmed specific game releases yet, the scope of the initiative — spanning entertainment mediums well beyond gaming — suggests that substantial projects are already in development behind the scenes.
