One of the most striking reveals to come out of the Summer Game Fest period is also one of the most culturally distinct. Chennai-based Ayelet Studio rolled out a full gameplay reveal trailer for Son of Thanjai, a cinematic action-adventure set in the culturally rich world of 11th-century South India.
You play as Vinnendiran, a young Chola prince who loses his family and identity amid invasion and famine. What begins as a quest to reclaim power gradually becomes a deeper journey of self-discovery, set against the backdrop of an ancient empire rendered with real reverence for its history and aesthetics.
Combat is the headline. Son of Thanjai is built around the Surul Vaal, a flexible whip-sword rarely seen in games, and its fluid, high-stakes melee draws directly from Kalaripayattu, one of the world’s oldest martial arts. The trailer shows the prince chaining elegant strikes into brutal, visceral finishers — a style that feels both grounded and distinctly its own.
Developed by a roughly 30-person team, the project carries real weight for India’s growing game industry, aiming to put an authentically South Indian story on the global AAA stage. Son of Thanjai is in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. A release date has not yet been announced.
