The castle is back. Stronghold 4, the next mainline entry in Firefly Studios' long-running medieval city-builder series, gets its first public, playable free demo today, June 23, as part of Steam Next Fest. After years of spin-offs and remasters that left longtime fans cold, this is the moment players finally get hands-on with the real thing.
Firefly revealed Stronghold 4 at the PC Gaming Show on June 7, pitching it as a narrative prequel to the original 2001 castle sim. Where older entries were content to drop you in front of a keep and a pile of stone, the new game opens with an actual story: it follows Penryn of Wethel, a shepherd whose quiet life is torn apart and who is forced, through trial by fire, to become the leader he never wanted to be.
Build it, then defend it
The Stronghold loop has always been a two-part fantasy - lovingly lay out a self-sufficient castle economy, then watch it get tested by a siege - and Stronghold 4 is doubling down on both halves. Firefly is promising deeper siegecraft mechanics in skirmish mode, a wide library of castle pieces and cosmetics so no two fortresses look alike, and the cinematic, voice-driven campaign that gives the whole thing a backbone.
The demo dropping into Steam Next Fest is your chance to kick the tires before committing. Expect a taste of the building, the economy juggling, and at least one situation where your beautiful walls meet an inconvenient army.

Early Access first
Stronghold 4 is launching into Steam Early Access later in 2026, and Firefly expects to stay there for roughly six months while it builds the game out with community feedback. The Early Access version is set to ship with a 22-mission prequel campaign, a full skirmish mode against eight distinct AI opponents, a Free Build sandbox, and a curated trail of bespoke skirmish scenarios - a meaty starting point rather than a bare-bones test build.
For a series that has spent more than a decade searching for its footing, a genuinely promising new mainline Stronghold is no small thing. The demo is free on the game's Steam page now; the full Early Access launch follows later this year.
