007 First Light Slips Off Switch 2 Until March 2027

IO Interactive has delayed the Nintendo Switch 2 version of 007 First Light from summer 2026 to March 2027, the second slip for that platform and the third date change overall. The studio says the extra months are going entirely into performance polish. The PS5, Xbox and PC versions launched on 27 May and sold three million copies in two weeks.

007 First Light Slips Off Switch 2 Until March 2027

Anyone who bought a Switch 2 on the promise that James Bond would eventually turn up on it is going to be waiting a while longer. IO Interactive has pushed the Nintendo Switch 2 edition of 007 First Light to March 2027, abandoning the summer 2026 window it had already fallen back to once before. No specific day has been attached to the new month yet.

That makes this the second time the Switch 2 version has moved, and the third date change the project has absorbed overall. The game was originally lined up for a 27 March 2026 launch across every platform. In December 2025 the studio pulled the whole thing back two months to 27 May. The Switch 2 build then split off from the pack in April and slid to late summer. Now it lands nine months past the version everyone else has been playing since spring.

What IO Interactive said

The studio's statement is short and does not dress the decision up as anything other than what it is. "We know many of you have been looking forward to experiencing Bond's reimagined origin story on Nintendo Switch 2, and we greatly appreciate your enthusiasm," it reads. "To ensure we deliver the quality of experience players expect, we have made the decision to delay the release to March 2027, with the exact date to be communicated later. This additional time will go toward polishing the Nintendo Switch 2 performance of the game."

Performance is the operative word. IO is not talking about missing content or unfinished missions, both of which would imply a version that is behind on features. It is talking about the frame rate and how the game holds together on hardware with a fraction of a PS5's budget, which is the part of a port that is hardest to fix in a hurry and hardest to hide once it ships.

Why this port is a hard one

007 First Light is not a stealth game that happens to have cars in it. It is built on IO's Glacier engine and leans on the same dense, heavily populated environments the studio has spent three Hitman games refining, then layers driving sequences and scripted set pieces on top. The Austrian mountain chase, the cliffside climbs, the crowded interiors where a dozen NPCs are tracking your position at once - all of it is expensive in ways that do not scale down neatly.

Switch 2 is a genuine generational jump over the original Switch, and it has already absorbed ports that looked implausible on paper. But "runs" and "runs well enough that a stealth game stays readable" are different bars. In a game where you are reading guard cones and timing gaps in patrol routes, a frame rate that wobbles is not a cosmetic problem; it is a fairness problem.

The version that already shipped is doing fine

The delay is awkward, but it is not a crisis. 007 First Light launched on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC on 27 May and moved three million copies inside two weeks, debuting at number one on the UK retail chart. It is comfortably the most successful Bond game in a very long time, and a strong enough performer that IO can afford to take the Switch 2 build off the conveyor belt rather than push out something that would get torn apart in its first week.

That is the cold logic here. A weak Switch 2 port of a well-liked game does more damage to the game's reputation than a late one does. The audience that was going to buy it on Nintendo hardware is, for the most part, still going to be there in March. The audience that buys a version running at an unstable 30fps and refunds it is not coming back.

Where March 2027 leaves it

March is a crowded month in most years and 2027 is shaping up to be no exception, but a nine-month-old game arriving on a new platform is not really competing for launch-window attention - it is competing for the slot on a Switch 2 owner's shelf where a big single-player game goes. The bigger question is whether IO uses the extra time for anything beyond optimisation, or whether the Switch 2 build simply arrives as parity-with-caveats and nothing more.

Either way, the studio has now told Switch 2 owners twice that the wait is longer than advertised. The third announcement needs to come with a date attached.
