Nintendo has made November 1 an official holiday for its plant-people. A short, surprise Pikmin Day Direct went out on October 31, and while Nintendo said up front that it would contain no new game announcements, it did put dates on the things Pikmin fans actually care about. The most useful one: a free demo of Pikmin 4 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy arrives on November 2, ten days before the full release on November 12.
A Pikmin 4 demo you can play this weekend
The demo covers the game's opening area and adds two stages from Dandori Academy, the new challenge mode built for the Switch 2 release. Progress carries over, so anything you do in the trial can be transferred into the full game when it launches. If you have been on the fence about whether the upgrade is worth it, you can try it on your own console before you spend anything.
For people who would rather watch first, Nintendo is also running a Nintendo Treehouse Plays broadcast on the Switch 2 Edition on November 1 at 9 AM PT / 12 PM ET, which is Pikmin Day itself.
What the Switch 2 Edition adds
Pikmin 4 first launched on the original Switch in 2023. The new version bundles that game with Switch 2 extras, and owners of the original can buy an upgrade pack instead of the whole game again. According to Nintendo's store listing, the Switch 2 version brings:
- Sharper visuals in both TV and handheld modes, using the newer hardware's higher resolution.
- Dandori Academy, a set of 72 timed exam stages that roll out over time and award in-game medals. Dandori is the series' word for commanding your Pikmin efficiently, and these stages test exactly that.
- Voice commands for Oatchi, the rescue-pup companion, through the Switch 2's built-in microphone.
- Dandori Battles with friends, either on the same system or through GameShare and GameChat, so a friend can join even if they do not own the game.
Dandori Academy is the part with staying power. Because its stages arrive gradually and come in a range of difficulties, it gives returning players a reason to keep coming back after the main expedition. That matters for a game many Switch 2 owners will already have finished once.
Pikmin Bloom heads underground this winter
The Direct was not only about the console game. Pikmin Bloom, the walking game for iOS and Android, is getting Secret Caves this winter. Nintendo's teaser shows a dark cave lit by glowing mushrooms and crystals. Players will explore the caves, fight familiar creatures from the series and dig up hidden treasure on their phones.
That is a real change for Bloom. The game has mostly been about walking, planting flowers and sending Pikmin out to fetch decor and fruit, with little in the way of combat or exploration. Nintendo has not yet given a firm date or a full breakdown of how the caves will work, beyond the winter window.
Hello! Pikmin, a series of short films
The third piece of news is not a game at all. Hello! Pikmin is a series of short animated films, with Nintendo Pictures named as a partner. The first episode, #01 Frog, is already up on Nintendo's official channels, and more are promised.

The style leans into what makes Pikmin charming: tiny creatures dwarfed by ordinary objects. In the first short's art, a lone red Pikmin stands next to a frog many times its size, with a baseball for scale. Nintendo has been building out its film and animation work in recent years, and Pikmin, a series about small things in a big, real-looking world, is a natural fit for shorts.
Why a Pikmin Day at all
The date is a visual pun. Written as 11.1, November 1 looks like three Pikmin standing in a row, and the Direct's title card has a blue, a yellow and a red Pikmin leaning on each of the three digits. Nintendo has given other franchises their own days before, and the timing here is plain: the Switch 2 Edition goes on sale less than two weeks later.
