One week after it took off, Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve has passed one million copies sold worldwide. Bandai Namco Entertainment announced the milestone on October 9 and said the game got there faster than any other game in the 30-year series. The flight shooter launched at the start of October on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. It is the first numbered Ace Combat since 2019, and it has already beaten the pace of every game before it.
A record for a 30-year-old series
The announcement is short on extra numbers. Bandai Namco did not break the total down by platform or region, and it did not say how many days it took to pass the mark. It did put the milestone in context: the series as a whole has now shipped more than 22 million copies since it began, and Wings of Theve is the quickest of all of them to reach a million. For a franchise that spent most of its life as a cult favourite next to Bandai Namco's bigger names, a seven-figure first week is a strong start for the new generation of the series.
The publisher credits the result to two groups at once: long-time fans who had waited seven years for a new numbered entry, and players coming to the series for the first time. That second group matters. The game launched with selectable difficulty and with guidance from Bandai Namco on choosing the right setting, which shows the publisher expected a wider audience than the series' usual veterans.

Two studios, one Project Aces game
Wings of Theve was built jointly by Bandai Namco Studios and Bandai Namco Aces, the studio set up in 2022 around the core Ace Combat team. In its announcement, Bandai Namco highlights how much of the game is rendered in a photoreal style. That covers the licensed real-world fighter jets and the sea, city and mountain environments, and it also covers the characters, who appear in real-time scenes rather than only as voices on the radio.
The sky is the main showpiece. The game models about 10,000 square kilometres of airspace using Cloudly, an in-house engine for clouds and weather. Layered cloud banks, contrails and sunlight reflecting off the canopy are meant to work as gameplay cues as well as decoration: they tell you where the enemy is and where you can hide, without the HUD having to point it out.
A pilot flying under a borrowed name
The campaign is set in July 2029, when the Federation of Central Usea is overrun by a surprise invasion from the Sotoan Republic and loses most of its military. The player starts adrift in a life raft and is picked up by the Endurance, an ageing aircraft carrier carrying refugees after it left the front line. On board, you are handed a name rather than a rank: the Wings of Theve, a legendary ace named after the federation's capital and treated as a symbol of hope. The catch, written into the game's subtitle, is that the legend was never true. You fly under a reputation you didn't earn, alongside three new squadron mates, and try to take back occupied territory.

Between sorties, cinematic scenes on the carrier use a first-person camera you can move yourself, so the story's quieter moments put you on the hangar deck with the crew instead of cutting to a menu. It is the biggest structural change the series has made to how it tells a story in years.
A 100-player lobby and what comes next
The other big addition is online. Wings of Theve has a social lobby that holds up to 100 players. Each player has a custom avatar, and the lobby's facilities cover unlocking and upgrading aircraft as well as a set of playable classic games. For a series whose multiplayer has usually been a separate menu option, a shared hub is a real change. It also suggests Bandai Namco wants players to keep coming back long after the campaign ends.

Bandai Namco has not announced any post-launch plans in this news, and it is pointing players to the game's official site and the Project Aces social channels for updates. The Deluxe Edition already includes a premium pass, so more aircraft and cosmetics are expected. The million-copy mark makes it likely the publisher will keep supporting the game after launch.
