Night City is heading to the cinema. Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action feature film set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, with Lorenzo di Bonaventura, the producer behind the Transformers and G.I. Joe film series, attached to produce alongside CD Projekt RED. The Polish studio's joint CEO, Michał Nowakowski, confirmed the partnership publicly on October 8, calling Paramount a partner that shares the company's creative ambitions for the franchise.
What has actually been confirmed
So far, the announcement is about who is making the film rather than what it will be. The project is a live-action feature, it lives at Paramount Pictures, and CD Projekt RED is producing it with di Bonaventura. The film will be set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, but no story, characters, director, writer, cast or release window has been announced.
Nowakowski's statement was short and deliberately open-ended: CD Projekt RED is excited to have Paramount as a future partner, and it will share more details "at the appropriate time." That wording points to a project at an early stage. It also leaves the most obvious question unanswered for now: whether the film follows V and Johnny Silverhand, the pair at the centre of the game, or tells a new story somewhere else in the setting.

A producer who knows big franchise films
Di Bonaventura has spent most of his career turning existing brands into large-scale action films, and much of that work has been with Paramount. The Transformers series, built from a toy line, became one of the studio's most dependable franchises, and the G.I. Joe films followed the same model. Pairing him with Cyberpunk 2077 signals that Paramount sees the property as a potential tentpole rather than a smaller genre piece.
Paramount has also had recent success with video game adaptations: its Sonic the Hedgehog films have grown into a full series of their own. A science-fiction action property with a built-in global audience fits squarely into that strategy.
What this means for the earlier live-action project
This is not the first time a live-action Cyberpunk has been on the table. In October 2023, CD Projekt RED announced a live-action project with Anonymous Content, the production company behind True Detective and Mr. Robot. At the time, the two companies did not say whether it would be a film or a series, and CD Projekt later described it as still being in the conceptual stage.
Neither CD Projekt RED nor Paramount has said how the new film relates to that earlier deal: whether it grew out of the same effort, replaced it, or runs alongside it. Until either company clarifies, the safest reading is that Paramount's film is the live-action Cyberpunk project with a studio and a named producer behind it.
The franchise is busier than ever
The film joins a growing list of Cyberpunk projects. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the 2022 anime series from Studio Trigger, brought a wave of new players to the game and is getting a second season. CD Projekt RED has also confirmed a full sequel, codenamed Project Orion, which is in development at the studio.

The game itself had a famously rocky launch in December 2020, but years of patches, the 2.0 overhaul and the Phantom Liberty expansion turned its reputation around. That recovery, plus the success of Edgerunners, is a large part of why the setting is now attractive to a major Hollywood studio.
CD Projekt RED also has experience with adaptations through The Witcher, which became a long-running live-action series on Netflix. With Cyberpunk, the studio is now co-producing directly, which suggests it wants a closer hand in how Night City looks on screen.
What to watch for next
The next pieces of news will be the ones that give the film a shape: a screenwriter, a director, and eventually a lead actor. Those announcements usually arrive months apart for a film at this stage, so a release date is unlikely to come any time soon. For now, the takeaway is simple: Cyberpunk 2077 has a live-action film in development at one of Hollywood's biggest studios, with its original creators producing.
