Stronghold 4 finally has a date. Firefly Studios has confirmed that the prequel to its 2001 castle sim opens on Steam Early Access on December 7, 2026, and it has put out a reworked demo you can play today. The announcement came during the Triple-i Initiative showcase on October 8. It ends the vague end-of-year window the game has carried since its reveal in June, and it gives series fans a full campaign to dig into two and a half weeks before Christmas.
What's in the Early Access launch
Early Access usually means a trimmed-down build, but Firefly is opening with a lot. On day one, the studio says, players get the full 22-mission story campaign, the complete Skirmish Trail, Free Build, and a Custom Skirmish mode that pits you against up to eight CPU lords at once. For a series whose fans have long spent hundreds of hours in skirmish and free-build modes, that covers most of what people actually play.
Three things are missing at launch, and Firefly says they will follow during Early Access: online multiplayer, an economic campaign and a co-op trail. Multiplayer in particular has been central to the series' following. Anyone who mainly plays Stronghold against friends should treat December 7 as the start of the single-player game, with the rest arriving later.

A prequel set before the original
Stronghold 4 goes back further than any game in the series. The campaign follows Penryn of Wethel, a shepherd in medieval England whose quiet life falls apart and who ends up chasing knighthood at the head of his own army. It is set well before the events of the 2001 original, and Firefly says the cast mixes new characters with familiar ones.
Ben Starr, best known as Final Fantasy XVI's Clive Rosfield, leads the voice cast alongside Samantha Béart, Walles Hamonde and Harry McEntire. Robert L. Euvino, whose music has defined the series since the first game, has written a new score.
Weather that changes the siege
This is the first Stronghold built in Unreal Engine 5, and Firefly is using the new engine for more than looks. Weather now feeds directly into the simulation. Snow slows crop growth, which puts pressure on your food supply in winter, and heavy rain cuts the range of your archers, which can turn a well-planned defence into a much closer fight. The maps are also the largest the series has had, giving armies more ground and attackers more routes to the walls.

The castle-building side keeps the series' focus on running a whole settlement. You balance honour, taxes and food to keep the peasants content, and you can customise your keep with cosmetic and feudal details. On defence there are familiar tools like moats and tunnelers, along with new military structures and units built around the updated combat systems.
The new demo, in two parts
The new demo is not the one that ran during June's Steam Next Fest. Firefly is releasing it in two stages. The first is live now and centres on Free Build on the largest map the series has ever shipped. It also adds a late-game unit called the Captain, moats as a defensive option, and wool and weaving production chains for your castle economy.
The second part adds Skirmish Mode on October 19, when October's Steam Next Fest begins. If you want to test the new unit against AI opponents before deciding about Early Access, that is the date to watch. Firefly is collecting feedback from both parts of the demo ahead of launch.

Can your PC run it?
The Steam listing's requirements are modest for an Unreal Engine 5 strategy game. The minimum spec is an Intel Core i5-4670 or AMD equivalent, 16 GB of RAM and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 with 3 GB of video memory, on 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 with DirectX 12. The recommended spec raises that to an Intel Core i5-7600 and a GeForce RTX 2060 with 6 GB, again with 16 GB of RAM.
Both tiers need 33 GB of storage, and Firefly recommends an SSD. The game also lists a broadband connection under its requirements, though the studio has not explained why.
What we still don't know
Firefly has not announced an Early Access price, how long it expects Early Access to last, or any plans beyond PC. For now, Stronghold 4 is listed only on Steam. You can wishlist it there and download the new demo from the same page.
