Eighteen days out from launch, Bandai Namco has put out the story trailer for Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve and, alongside it, confirmed the return of the mission type long-time pilots have been asking about since the game was first shown: Annihilation Battle.
The trailer itself is a crew piece more than a hardware piece. It follows the people aboard The Endurance through a war that is going badly for the Federation of Central Usea, cutting between dogfights against Sotoan ace squadrons and the superweapons the FCU has no answer for. It is the first extended look at the game's cast in motion rather than in stills, and it lands with under three weeks to go before the October 2 release on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
Annihilation Battle is the mission type that lets you off the leash
The more interesting reveal is the mode. Annihilation Battle drops you into a counterattack against Sotoan forces and then, unusually for a modern flight game, mostly stops telling you what to do. A solar power plant, an oil tank farm, an air base and an ammo dump are all live on the map at once. Which of them dies, and in what order, is your call.
Producer Manabu Shimomoto frames it as the purest expression of what the series is for, calling it the mission category that best embodies the core pillar of Ace Combat - the part where the game hands you a sky full of legitimate targets and trusts you to sort out the priorities yourself.
Two systems make that freedom mean something rather than just being a longer list. The first is resupply: designated supply lines on the map let you rearm mid-mission, so a long Annihilation Battle sortie is not capped by whatever you happened to load out with back in the hangar. Run dry on air-to-ground ordnance halfway through and the answer is to find a supply point, not to abort.
The second is chain reactions. Flammable structures do not simply pop and vanish - hit the right one and the blast propagates into whatever is standing next to it. Shimomoto points to this as the strategic layer of the mode, and it is the part that turns target selection into something closer to a puzzle than a checklist: a well-placed first strike on a fuel installation can do the work of three separate bombing runs.
A six-kilometre island and a rod from orbit
The trailer also puts names to two of the superweapons the FCU is up against. Megafloat Fatsia is a six-kilometre artificial island doubling as a military arms factory, wrapped in enough layered defences that it reads as a set-piece rather than a target. Tonitrus Spear is the other end of the scale - a kinetic orbital weapon that drops dense metal rods instead of warheads, which is exactly the sort of thing Ace Combat has always been happy to build a mission around.
Where this leaves the run-up to launch
Wings of Theve is the first mainline entry since Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown, and Bandai Namco Aces has been rationing information carefully - a release-date trailer at June's State of Play, aircraft and squadron details across the summer, and now the story beat plus a signature mission type with a fortnight left on the clock.
What is worth noting about the Annihilation Battle reveal specifically is that it is a structural promise rather than a cosmetic one. Plenty of flight games sell spectacle; comparatively few build a mission where the shape of your sortie is genuinely yours to decide, with rearming and environmental damage as the two levers that make the decision matter. If the rest of the campaign carries the same amount of slack, that is the thing to watch for on launch day.
Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve launches October 2, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
