Game Freak spent the weekend letting BlizzCon and Level-5 have the news cycle, then walked out on Monday morning with the single strangest announcement of the month. Ame no Chi Hare Onna - roughly Sunshine Girl After the Rain - is a free-to-play mobile game about hanging out the washing. It is built around the real weather forecast where you happen to be standing. And it is directed by the man who has run mainline Pokemon development for over a decade.
The studio filed it under a genre it appears to have invented on the spot: a laundry game.
Your local forecast is the game's random number generator
The hook is that Ame no Chi Hare Onna is wired into live weather data across Japan. Real conditions in the real world feed into the game, so the experience shifts depending on whether it is pouring in Osaka or blue-sky clear in Sendai. Game Freak's framing is that this makes the game part of a daily routine rather than something you binge - you check tomorrow's forecast, and tomorrow's forecast is also your game state.
That is a genuinely unusual design commitment for a mobile free-to-play title, because it hands control of the moment-to-moment experience to something no live-ops team can tune. A gacha banner can be rescheduled. A typhoon cannot. Anyone who has played a game with a real-time day/night cycle knows the feeling of logging in at the wrong hour and finding half the content shut; Hare Onna is proposing to do that with rain.

Magical girls, but the magic is drying racks
The setting is present-day Japan. The Hare Onna of the title are magical girls who convert weather into power and use it to lift the mood of the people around them - the literal reading is closer to "sunshine women," and the game leans on that pun hard. Each girl is paired with a Kumorin, a cloud-shaped messenger of the gods who grants her that power and, based on the key art, spends most of its time being extremely pleased with itself.
The girls appear to be drawn from different regions of Japan, which slots neatly into the weather conceit: a national map, regional forecasts, regional characters. The first one introduced is Himawari Harewatari, representing Kanto, voiced by Hiyori Kono. Her Kumorin partner is Pon Arai, voiced by Yuki Nagano.
The staff list is the headline
Shigeru Ohmori is directing and producing. That is the name that turns this from a curiosity into a story. Ohmori has been the primary director of the mainline Pokemon series since Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire in 2014, and he is also credited as concept lead and senior director on Pokemon Pokopia. Seeing him attached to a free-to-play laundry simulator, rather than to a monster-collecting RPG, is the clearest signal yet that Game Freak is serious about the non-Pokemon half of its output.
The rest of the credited team: Katsutaka Suginaka of co-developer CHRONOGATE is scenario director, Aki Minami designed the Hare Onna, and Kyoko Abe of Game Freak designed the Kumorin. CHRONOGATE is developing alongside Game Freak rather than simply porting or supporting.
What we still do not know
Plenty. The announcement covers the premise, the cast and the weather system, but not the loop. There is no clear picture yet of what you actually do minute to minute - whether the laundry is a timing puzzle, a resource system, a collection layer, or the frame around something else entirely. Monetisation is listed as free-to-play with in-app purchases, which tells you almost nothing about whether this is a gacha.
It is also Japan-only as things stand. Nothing in the announcement mentions a Western release, and a game whose core mechanic is plugged into Japanese regional weather data is not the most obvious candidate for a global launch. That may change; it may not.

Two dates worth noting
The first official livestream, Hare Onna Club Meeting #1, airs today - September 14 - at 19:00 JST, hosted by Weathernews presenter Airi Yamagishi, with the development team walking through the production process and introducing the characters alongside their voice actors. Given how little the announcement actually explains about how the game plays, that broadcast is where the substance should land.
After that, Tokyo Game Show. TGS 2026 runs September 17 to 21 at Makuhari Messe, and Game Freak has said more information is coming there. A brand-new original IP from the Pokemon studio, shown at TGS, one week after being announced out of nowhere - that is a deliberate run-up, not an accident.
Ame no Chi Hare Onna launches this winter for iOS and Android, free-to-play with in-app purchases.
