Bethesda Officially Confirms Fallout 3 and New Vegas Remasters - Plus a New Obsidian Collaboration and Fallout 5 Pre-Production

In a July 17 statement, Bethesda confirmed it has been working on remasters of both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas - no dates given. The studio also revealed a separate new Fallout game being made with Obsidian, confirmed Fallout 5 is in pre-production, and reiterated that The Elder Scrolls VI remains its primary focus.

Bethesda Officially Confirms Fallout 3 and New Vegas Remasters - Plus a New Obsidian Collaboration and Fallout 5 Pre-Production

It's the announcement Fallout fans have speculated about for years, and Bethesda finally made it official. In a statement posted July 17, 2026, Bethesda Game Studios confirmed what had long been rumored: remasters of both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are in active development.

Bethesda's Exact Words

The studio was careful to temper expectations on timing while confirming the work is real: "We also know many players want to revisit previous Fallout experiences. While we're not announcing any dates today, we have been working on remasters for both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas."

That's it - no release window, no platform list, no gameplay footage. But after years of dodging the question, Bethesda putting it in writing is the confirmation fans have been waiting for.

A Separate, New Fallout Game - With Obsidian

The remasters weren't the only Fallout news in the statement. Bethesda also confirmed it is collaborating with Obsidian Entertainment - the studio behind the original New Vegas - on an entirely new Fallout project. Importantly, this is a distinct, third title: not one of the two remasters, and not Fallout 5. Bethesda offered little beyond confirming the partnership exists: "new Fallout project. We'll have more to share in the future."

Fallout 5 Is Real, But It's Not Next

Bethesda also put a number on where the mainline series stands: "Fallout 5 is currently in preproduction." That confirms the game exists as a planned project, but pre-production is an early stage - don't expect it soon. The studio was explicit about its current priority: "The Elder Scrolls VI is our primary development focus today." Both The Elder Scrolls VI and Fallout 5 are confirmed to run on Creation Engine 3.

What This Actually Means

Sorting through it, Bethesda has now confirmed four distinct Fallout projects in various stages: a Fallout 3 remaster, a Fallout: New Vegas remaster, a new Obsidian-developed Fallout game, and Fallout 5 itself - all while The Elder Scrolls VI continues to soak up the bulk of the studio's internal resources. It's a lot of smoke for a franchise that's been running hot since the Amazon show and the FIfa Fallout 76 revival, but Bethesda is still asking fans to be patient. No dates were given for any of it - just confirmation that all of it is actually happening.
