Activision has given Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's single-player campaign its first real showing, and the mission it picked is called Stranded. The vignette drops your squad deep inside hostile territory in North Korea with no easy way out and an enemy force actively hunting them — a setup the series has flirted with before, but rarely at this length or this quietly.
What the footage actually shows is a mission that keeps changing shape. It opens in snowbound ruins with the squad pinned and moving between cover, shifts into stealth work and room-by-room clearing indoors, then escalates into open firefights, rooftop contacts, a vehicle chase and, eventually, missile strikes coming down on the position. It is structured less like a corridor and more like a bad day that keeps getting worse.

A quieter register than the marketing suggested
The more interesting thing about the first look is its tone. Infinity Ward has framed Stranded as taut and unexpectedly intimate, with the camera lingering on faces and the dialogue kept low and clipped between contacts. Recent Modern Warfare campaigns have leaned on globe-hopping set pieces and rapid location changes; this one appears to be doing the opposite, foregrounding character and consequence and letting a single stretch of ground carry the whole mission.
That reading matches the campaign's billing rather than contradicting it. The snow, the isolation and the constant sense of being outnumbered do a lot of narrative work without needing a briefing scene to explain them, and the trailer's second title card — Stranded. Surrounded. Hunted. — is about as economical a pitch as the series has managed.
Release timing and early access
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. Anyone who digitally pre-orders or pre-purchases the Standard Digital Edition or the Vault Edition gets into the campaign a week early, on October 16 — that early access applies across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam and Switch 2, with Switch 2 pre-orders opening later in the year.
The campaign has been the quiet part of MW4's marketing until now. Multiplayer got a full COD NEXT showing and a public beta in late August, which Infinity Ward has already used to rework footstep audio, add a fourth map and adjust map voting. Stranded is the first substantial look at what the campaign is actually doing with its runtime — and it is a more restrained answer than the beta build-up implied.
