Medabots S is finally leaving Japan. Imagineer has opened global pre-registration for the command-based robot battle RPG on both Google Play and the App Store, more than six years after the game launched domestically in 2020. The App Store listing currently points at a January 21, 2027 release window, though Imagineer has not committed to a firm global date.
For a series that had a genuine Western moment around the turn of the millennium — the Game Boy games, the anime, the toy line — and then largely vanished from English-language storefronts, this is a bigger deal than the announcement's low-key rollout suggests. Medabots has kept shipping in Japan more or less continuously; the West has just not been invited.
Robattles, unchanged
The core is the same 3v3 Robattle format the console RPGs ran on. You field three customised Medabots, and each one is assembled from four swappable parts: Head, Right Arm, Left Arm and Legs. Combat is turn-based and part-targeted, so you can deliberately shoot out an opponent's arm to strip an attack, or take out legs to wreck their mobility, rather than just grinding a single HP bar down. Medals slot in on top of the parts and shape how a bot behaves, and items let you power individual components up.
Six years of content arriving at once
The Japanese version's long run is the real selling point here. Medabots S has accumulated more than 320 different Medabots over six years of service, alongside an original story and characters pulled from across the wider franchise rather than one specific entry. Its collaboration history is unusually good for a game this size, too — past crossovers have included Digimon, Mega Man Battle Network and Ultraman.
Quite how much of that back catalogue arrives at global launch is the open question. Long-running Japanese mobile titles brought west usually either compress years of events into an accelerated schedule or start players near the current banner state, and Imagineer has not said which approach it is taking. Nor has it detailed the monetisation, though the Japanese version is free-to-play with gacha part distribution.
Pre-registration is open now on Google Play and the App Store. Imagineer is separately bringing Medabots Survivors, a survivor-style action spin-off, to global audiences as well — making 2026 into 2027 the busiest stretch the franchise has had outside Japan in roughly two decades.
