Dune: Awakening Lands on Xbox With a Full Single-Player Mode

Funcom's Dune survival MMO is out now on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and Cloud Gaming, arriving with a full single-player mode, the conclusion of Book One, and a rebuilt Landsraad endgame.

Dune: Awakening Lands on Xbox With a Full Single-Player Mode

Funcom's Dune survival MMO has finally made the jump to Xbox, and it has not arrived quietly. Dune: Awakening is out now on Xbox Series X|S, the Microsoft Store and Xbox Cloud Gaming, and the console launch is bundled with the largest update the game has received since its PC release — one that adds a complete single-player mode, closes out the story's first book, and rebuilds the faction endgame around missions instead of guild logistics.

Everything, on day one

The Xbox build is not a trimmed-down port. Funcom describes it as the complete experience with a console-tailored interface and control scheme, and it ships across the full Microsoft ecosystem: Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC through the Microsoft Store, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and handheld play on ROG Xbox Ally. It supports Play Anywhere with shared progression, so a character started on a console carries across to the PC client without a second purchase.

Two graphics modes are on offer. Performance targets 60fps at a dynamic 4K, while Quality drops to 30fps at a dynamic 4K in exchange for fidelity. Series X renders at a higher native resolution in both modes and layers on additional visual features on top.

A survival MMO with a single-player switch

The headline addition is a genuine single-player mode, and it comes with a set of dials rather than a single difficulty slider. Starting out, you pick one of three difficulty presets or open the settings and tune the game in detail: sandstorm behaviour, harvesting and XP multipliers, building piece limits, item durability and a good deal more besides. On rented private servers, which options are available depends on what the provider exposes.

That pairs with a broader decision about PvP. Every part of Dune: Awakening can now be played entirely in PvE, and Funcom is explicit that no content, mechanic or reward sits behind agreeing to be shot at. The studio has also gone back through the various ways the game used to take progress away from you and removed a number of them.

Book One has an ending now

The Great Convention Part III has begun, and with it the story's final chapter. That means the whole of Book One can be played start to finish in a single run for the first time, rather than in instalments spread across a year of updates. Every existing story mission has also been given new rewards on top of whatever it granted before: swatches, weapon and armour variants, and placeable decorations ranging from the Maw of the Worm Wall Relief to the Ascendant Throne of the Reverend Mother.

Characters are now the centre of the experience rather than the server they happen to live on, with backed-up bases and vehicles travelling with you between worlds.

The Landsraad, rebuilt

The faction-versus-faction endgame has been reconstructed as a mission-driven framework that works the same whether you are playing alongside a few hundred other people or entirely by yourself — which is the piece that had to change for a single-player mode to mean anything past the credits. There are twenty ranks to climb, from outsider up to Atreides Envoy or Harkonnen Enforcer, with rewards attached along the way.

Arrakis itself has grown to support it. There are seven new mission locations, six Imperial Testing Stations, and more contracts and dynamic encounters scattered across the map.

New systems for characters and gear

Specializations is a new progression layer that lets you invest points across crafting, gathering, exploration, combat and sabotage, unlocking traits that improve damage, durability, inventory space and mission rewards — and in some cases open up entire technologies, such as Augmentation.

Augmentations themselves are modifiers you attach to unique Tier 6 weapons and armour. Schematics turn up in Testing Stations, and the crafting bill is paid with resources earned through Landsraad missions. Funcom has also cut the rare-material requirements on late-game items specifically so that solo and single-player characters can reach the endgame, and moved augment crafting onto a bell curve so good rolls land far more often.

On the cosmetic side there is full character re-customization in Arrakeen and Harko Village, new hairstyles and tattoos, a dedicated armour set for each School of the Imperium, and the ability to rename vehicles, containers and placeables.

Combat feels different too

The parry window has been widened and NPC animations have had a pass. Enemy stamina has been rebalanced, heavy attacks now deal the same damage as slow blade attacks, enemy AI has been improved, and dashing lets you pass through enemies rather than bouncing off them. Two weapons have joined the roster since the PC launch — Dual Blades and the Pyrocket — and the Rapier has been reworked into a dedicated parrying weapon.

Launch rewards and what comes next

Anyone who plays between September 17 and October 22 picks up the Matron's Decor as a launch reward. The Filmic Archive DLC also arrived today, pulling looks out of Dune: Part One and Part Two: the Aegis of an Unwalked Path armor, the Caladan Stormcoat, Harkonnen Cataphract and Atreides Hoplite armor, the Longhaul Stillsuit, three Sardaukar armour sets, plus weapons, emotes and a 73-piece Sardaukar building set with 17 decorations. Funcom notes it has also been addressing duping and exploit issues.

The studio is treating the Xbox launch as a starting point rather than a finish line. The Polar Cap arrives later this year as a free update, adding an icy biome and survival map with its own mechanics, resources, loot, craftables and a standalone storyline. Full cross-play is coming after the console launch, with details still to follow, and further film tie-in cosmetics are planned to land alongside the third instalment of the film series.
