With Xbox's restructuring cutting deep into Bethesda's ranks this month, the question fans most wanted answered was simple: does this touch The Elder Scrolls 6? Bethesda's answer, delivered directly and without hedging, was no.
Bethesda's Direct Answer
Asked point-blank whether reports of potential delays were accurate, Bethesda Game Studios replied by email to YouTuber MrMattyPlays on July 22: "No, the roadmap is unaffected." The studio reiterated that The Elder Scrolls 6 remains a priority, and noted it's still working on optimizations for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered alongside it. Bethesda also pushed back on the idea that its recent wave of announcements - including four new Fallout projects - was forced by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, characterizing it instead as a deliberate shift toward clearer, more frequent communication with fans.

Not Everyone Inside Bethesda Agrees
That official reassurance sits awkwardly next to earlier reporting. Multiple Bethesda employees had told IGN the layoffs - part of a round that cut roughly 3,200 Xbox jobs, 440 of them at Bethesda and ZeniMax directly - would have a "substantial and cascading effect" on Elder Scrolls 6 development. Bethesda's public statement doesn't address that account directly, leaving a gap between what leadership is saying externally and what some staff have described internally.
The Realistic Timeline, Regardless
Whether or not the layoffs change anything, nobody is claiming this game is close. Bloomberg's Jason Schreier reported that Elder Scrolls 6 remains "at least two or three years away from completion" as of July 2026 - pointing to a release no earlier than late 2028, and quite possibly further out than that. Bethesda's "unaffected roadmap" is reassuring on its own terms, but it was never a roadmap pointing toward next year to begin with.
