Football Manager 27 will be free to play for five days before it launches. Sports Interactive and SEGA have announced that the FM27 Launch Preview opens to every PC and Mac player at 6pm GMT on October 29 and stays free until 6pm GMT on November 3, with all game modes switched on, no sign-up required, and saves that carry straight through to the full release on November 10.
The dates and times
The free window runs for exactly five days. It opens at 6pm GMT (2pm ET, 11am PT) on Thursday, October 29, and closes at the same time on Tuesday, November 3. Because the UK clocks go back on October 25, GMT and UTC line up for the whole period, so there is no daylight-saving arithmetic to do.
The Launch Preview can be downloaded from Steam, the Epic Games Store and the Microsoft Store, and it is also available through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. This is a PC and Mac event only; console and mobile versions of FM27 are not part of it.
Full launch follows a week after the free period closes, on November 10.
What “Launch Preview” means this year
Longtime players will know the pre-release build as the Beta or Advanced Access. For FM27, Sports Interactive has renamed it the Launch Preview, and the studio says the build is meant to be much closer in quality and completeness to the final release than earlier early-play versions were. Every game mode is available during the free period, not a trimmed demo slice.

There is one caveat carried over from previous years. The preview contains licensing data that is still going through approval with rights holders, so some club and player assets may be missing or inaccurate until launch. Expect the odd generic badge or placeholder face.
Your save carries over
The most useful detail for anyone planning a long career is that nothing started during the free window is thrown away. A save created between October 29 and November 3 can be continued into the paid Launch Preview and then into the full game, without restarting.
When the free period ends, the pre-purchase offer kicks in. Buying FM27 from Steam, Epic or the Microsoft Store during this window comes with a 10% discount and lets you keep playing the Launch Preview from November 3 straight through to November 10. Game Pass players do not need to buy anything to continue: their saves carry on through the subscription. SEGA notes that the uninterrupted access applies only to purchases made through its approved digital retailers, so key-reseller codes may not unlock the paid preview.
Why Sports Interactive is doing this
The studio is open about its motives. It had already said it wanted to show more of FM27 before asking players to pre-order, and it frames the free period as a direct step in rebuilding player trust after a difficult stretch for the series. Football Manager skipped 2024 entirely after FM25 was cancelled, and the series returned last year with FM26, the first entry on the new Unity-based engine. That rebuild had a rocky reception, and FM27 is very much the second attempt at it.

SEGA describes a free-to-play period for an annual release, with every mode available, as an industry first. Whether or not that holds up, it is an unusually confident move for a yearly sports management game, and it means the community gets to judge the new build on its own terms before spending money.
What is new in FM27
Sports Interactive has spent the last few weeks walking through FM27's changes in a series of deep dives. The headline additions are tactical. Tactical Effectiveness replaces the old Tactical Familiarity system and pulls together four inputs (player ability, preparation for the next match, how much your squad buys into your approach, and how well they understand it), with gauges on the tactics, training and recruitment screens. Scout reports show how well a transfer target fits your setup. Tactical Tweaks gives you more direct control from the touchline during matches.
Training has had a usability overhaul built around preparing for the next opponent, with fewer clicks to set up recurring schedules, while individual development plans remain. The classic 2D match view has been refined with smaller player discs and ball, along with revised shadows and nets, to make matches easier to follow. The In-Game Editor is now a full-screen tool, and news, board feedback, loan reports and scouting updates have been reworked to surface more information at a glance.

On the presentation side, newgen faces have more variety in skin, hair and expression, the manager creator has many more options, and accessibility settings now include larger font sizes, the option to switch off some UI animations, and a colour-blind mode. Interface density can be set to small, medium or large.
PC requirements
The Steam listing asks for a modest machine. Minimum: a 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 PC with an Intel Core i3-530 or AMD FX-4100, 6GB of RAM, and a GeForce GTX 960, Radeon R9 380 or Intel HD 530 with 1GB of VRAM. Recommended: Windows 11, an Intel Core i5-9600 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600, 12GB of RAM, and a GeForce RTX 2060 or Radeon RX 5600 XT. Either way you will need 20GB of free storage. A Mac version is also included.
The bottom line
If FM26 put you off, this is the cheapest possible way to find out whether FM27 wins you back: download it on October 29, play for five days, and keep the save if you decide to buy. The full game launches on November 10.
