The most evocative reveal of Summer Game Fest 2026 came from a familiar visionary. genDESIGN, the studio led by Fumito Ueda — the mind behind ICO, Shadow of the Colossus and The Last Guardian — finally gave its long-gestating new project a name and a proper look: gen ATLAS.
It is an open-world action-adventure starring a small robotic protagonist stranded on a desolate planet blanketed in colossal mechanical structures. As you'd hope from this studio, the trailer trades in scale and loneliness, pitting your tiny hero against everything from swarms of little machines to towering ancient robots that wouldn't look out of place among Ueda's beloved colossi.
Climb, glide, and hijack giants
Gameplay glimpses showed firearms and platforming tools like a jetpack for scaling vertical structures and clambering over enormous foes. Most intriguing of all is a giant flying robot head that can attach itself to and seize control of various dead machines — a traversal-and-combat hook with serious Shadow of the Colossus energy reimagined for a mechanical world.
Backed by Epic
gen ATLAS is being published by Epic Games Publishing and is heading to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via the Epic Games Store. No release date was given, but after years of quiet, simply having a title, a trailer and a platform list is enough to make this one of the most anticipated games on the horizon.
