Gothic 1 Remake Storms Onto PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on June 5 - Alkimia Interactive Rebuilds Piranha Bytes' Genre-Defining 2001 RPG With Modernised Combat and a Fully Living Colony

One of the most influential role-playing games of the early 2000s is about to be reborn. Gothic 1 Remake launches worldwide on June 5, 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, handing a new generation the chance to step inside the Colony — the prison valley sealed beneath a magical barrier that turned the 2001 original into a cult classic.

Developed by Barcelona-based Alkimia Interactive and published by THQ Nordic, the remake is a ground-up reconstruction of Piranha Bytes' genre-defining RPG. THQ Nordic acquired the Gothic creators and the intellectual property back in 2019, and Alkimia has spent years rebuilding the game in Unreal Engine 5 while fighting to preserve the prickly, deeply immersive identity that earned the series such fierce loyalty across Europe.

Trapped in the Colony

You play the Nameless Hero, hurled into a penal colony on the island of Khorinis where the king's convicts mine precious magic ore. A barrier raised to keep the prisoners in went catastrophically wrong, trapping the guards inside too — and in the lawless valley that followed, three rival factions carved out their own brutal order. With no allegiances and no reputation, you must talk, fight and scheme your way into one of the camps and slowly earn a place in a world that has every reason to ignore you.

Modernised combat, a world that lives without you

Alkimia is promising more than 50 hours of open-world adventure across the hand-built Colony. The combat has been overhauled with more responsive, modern dynamics, but the studio insists it keeps the tactical, weighty foundation that made fights feel earned rather than automatic. Just as importantly, the world keeps its trademark sense of routine: NPCs follow believable daily schedules, working, eating, sleeping and arguing whether or not the player is watching.

Pre-orders are already open across all platforms, with buyers receiving the official digital soundtrack as a bonus. For longtime fans it is the culmination of a remake that has been teased through years of showcases; for newcomers, it is finally a chance to understand why the word "Gothic" still carries so much weight in RPG circles.
