HoYoverse has dated the next big Honkai: Star Rail patch. Version 4.6, titled "Dance With the Beast Before Moonrise," goes live on September 28 across iOS, Android, PC and PS5, and the studio walked through the whole package in a special program broadcast over the weekend. The headline addition is Pearl, a five-star Ice character on the Path of Elation, but the update also pushes the Astropolis storyline into its next chapter and quietly sets up something bigger: Zenless Zone Zero characters are joining the Astral Express in Version 4.8.
The story picks up right after the Aha reveal
Version 4.5 left the Trailblazer sitting on a fairly enormous piece of information — Nihilux being revealed as Aha, the Aeon of Elation. Version 4.6 does not let that sit. The Trailblazer and Pearl head deep into Astropolis to the Life Sciences Institute, chasing down a scheme to weaponize the husk. It is the kind of location HoYoverse tends to use well: a self-contained research complex with a conspiracy running underneath it, rather than another sprawling open zone to comb through.
Astropolis only opened in Version 4.5 back in late August, so 4.6 is the first update to build on a map the playerbase has had for barely a month. That is a faster turn than the Amphoreus arc got, and it suggests HoYoverse is treating Astropolis as a location it wants to develop in consecutive patches rather than parking it.
Pearl learns from the rest of your team
Pearl is a five-star Ice unit walking the Path of Elation, the newer path that has been slowly filling out since Aha moved to the centre of the story. Her kit is built around two ideas. The first is damage mitigation: she spends a resource to block a share of the damage the whole party takes, which is an unusual job for a DPS-leaning path and gives her a defensive floor most Elation units do not have.
The second is the more interesting one. Pearl enters a "Deep Learning" state that reads her teammates' combat data and copies their attacks. In practice that makes her team composition a real variable rather than a stat check — what she does depends on who she is standing next to. She also synergises specifically with other Path of Elation characters, granting bonus damage and extra turns when the party leans that direction. Anyone who has been stockpiling Elation units since the path was introduced now has a payoff unit to build around.
Her signature Light Cone, "Colors for Tomorrow," runs alongside her on the first banner.
The banner order
The rerun schedule is straightforward this time. Pearl headlines the first half. Evanescia, the five-star who anchored the anniversary stretch earlier in the year, returns in the same phase. Mortenax Blade — the five-star Fire Nihility unit who led Version 4.3 — comes back in the second half.
That is a fairly forgiving split for anyone who missed either of those two. Both are recent enough that their reruns arriving this quickly is on the generous end of HoYoverse's usual cadence, and it means players who want Pearl are not being forced to choose between her and a long-awaited return in the same window.
The events lean multiplayer
Version 4.6's event slate is unusually varied. The one with the clearest hook is a mechatron workshop management event, where you help Skott run the place — a management-sim detour of the kind Star Rail periodically drops in as a palate cleanser between combat grinds. There is also a "One Take" event framed as a combat reality show, which is a format the game has flirted with before and which usually translates to scored, gimmick-restricted encounters.
Beyond those, 4.6 adds a co-op challenge mode and a new companion system that lets players pick up creatures to bring along on adventures. HoYoverse has been slowly adding social and co-op hooks to a game that launched as a strictly solo turn-based RPG, and 4.6 continues that drift. New outfits are also on the way, including a set for Hyacine and one for Evanescia.
Ellen and Astra Yao are coming, but not yet
The crossover is the announcement people will remember. Ellen Joe and Astra Yao — both from HoYoverse's own Zenless Zone Zero — are joining Honkai: Star Rail as part of a collaboration. They arrive in Version 4.8, not 4.6, so this is a flag planted roughly two patches ahead rather than something to plan your pulls around this month.
It is worth noting what this is and what it is not. HoYoverse has run in-house crossovers before, but bringing playable characters across from an action game into a turn-based one is a different exercise than a cosmetic nod. How Ellen's close-quarters kit and Astra Yao's support role translate into Star Rail's turn order is the open question, and the studio has not shown either of them in combat yet.
The out-of-game stuff
Alongside the patch, HoYoverse announced a Razer partnership built around Silver Wolf, covering gaming and lifestyle peripherals. There is also a Mega MGC Coffee tie-in running from October 15 to November 18 with themed drinks and a stamp challenge, and HoYoLAND 2026, the company's own festival, is set for October 2 to 5 at KINTEX in Ilsan.
None of that changes what is in the game, but it is a reasonable indicator of where Star Rail sits commercially three and a half years in: the merchandise and event calendar is now running on its own schedule alongside the patch cycle.
When it lands
Version 4.6 "Dance With the Beast Before Moonrise" launches September 28 on iOS, Android, PC and PlayStation 5. As with every Star Rail update, expect maintenance downtime ahead of the switchover and the usual compensation for it. The version 4.8 crossover follows later in the cycle.
