Metro 2039 Returns to the Moscow Tunnels in Stunning Official Reveal — Launching Winter 2026 on PS5, Xbox, and PC

4A Games officially revealed Metro 2039 today in an Xbox First Look broadcast, confirming a Winter 2026 launch on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and Epic with a return to the claustrophobic Moscow tunnels under the fanatical Hunter-led Novoreich regime.

Metro 2039 Returns to the Moscow Tunnels in Stunning Official Reveal — Launching Winter 2026 on PS5, Xbox, and PC

After nearly seven years of silence since Metro Exodus crossed the wastelands of post-nuclear Russia, 4A Games has finally pulled the curtain back. Metro 2039 was officially unveiled today, April 16, 2026, during the Xbox First Look broadcast — a 15-minute world premiere that included developer interviews, a six-minute reveal trailer, and the first real gameplay tease of the Ukrainian studio's long-awaited return. And it is as bleak, beautiful, and terrifying as fans of the series could have hoped for.

The broadcast confirmed that Metro 2039 is launching this Winter 2026 on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. Deep Silver is publishing, 4A Games is once again developing, and the series is coming home — back to the suffocating, candlelit tunnels beneath a dead Moscow that made the original Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light so unforgettable.

The Setup: A Metro Under a New Tyrant

The year is 2039. A full quarter-century has passed since the nuclear apocalypse that drove humanity underground. The surviving Muscovites, after decades of fractured tribal warfare between the Red Line, the Fourth Reich, Polis, and the Hanseatic League, have finally been unified — but not through diplomacy or hope. They have been conquered by a single, fanatical leader: a former Spartan Ranger known only as Hunter.

Hunter's new regime, the Novoreich, rules the tunnels through propaganda, fear, and the fabrication of a new enemy on the surface. The irony is cruel — the man who once hunted the Dark Ones to protect humanity has become the thing he fought against. You play as a newly voiced protagonist called The Stranger, caught between obedience and rebellion, tasked with uncovering what Hunter is really hiding in the deep stations no one is allowed to enter anymore.

Back to the Tunnels — Literally

Creative Director Andriy mLs Shevchenko and Co-Creative Director Pavel Ulmer made one point abundantly clear during the presentation: after the open-world experiment of Metro Exodus, the series is returning to its linear, claustrophobic roots. Metro 2039 sees players going back to the tunnels and leaning into what makes Metro feel like Metro, Shevchenko said. That means tight corridors, gas mask management, flickering flashlights, hand-cranked generators, scavenged ammunition as currency, and the oppressive weight of silence punctuated by distant, inhuman screams.

The gameplay footage shown was a mixture of real-time cinematics and actual combat, including a heart-stopping mutant encounter that showcased the signature wristwatch filter timer, the improvised Bastard weapons, and the studio's obsessive attention to environmental storytelling. Every candle, every propaganda poster on a wall, every abandoned station is hand-placed and deliberate. This is not a game that will be generated by algorithms.

Built on the 4A Engine — Again

Executive Producer Jon Bloch confirmed that Metro 2039 is once again running on 4A Games' proprietary in-house engine, the same technology stack that made Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition one of the earliest and most breathtaking showcases of real-time ray tracing on console. The new game pushes it even further, with a complete rewrite of the global illumination system, volumetric fog simulations that react dynamically to the player's movement, and path-traced reflections that make every puddle of radioactive water feel uncomfortably present.

The studio has stated that they are targeting 60fps performance modes on PS5 and Xbox Series X, with a 30fps fidelity mode that enables full path-tracing. PC players with modern RTX hardware will get the full suite of features, and the game is confirmed to support DLSS 4, FSR 4, and XeSS at launch.

A Game Shaped by War

4A Games has been open about how Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine has reshaped Metro 2039's development. Most of the studio relocated from Kyiv to Malta in the wake of the 2022 invasion, and the team has been vocal about how the experience of being Ukrainian developers making a game set in Russia has forced them to rewrite entire sections of the story. The original Metro novels by Dmitry Glukhovsky are still the narrative foundation — Glukhovsky himself, who was declared a foreign agent by the Russian government and is now exiled, remains involved — but the themes of nationalism, propaganda, and the manufacturing of enemies land with new and obvious weight.

We are making a game about choices, actions, and the cost of securing a future, Shevchenko said during the stream. Those words mean something different to us than they did in 2019.

What We Are Still Waiting to Learn

The reveal was deliberately cagey on a few key points. No specific release date within the winter window was given, though industry watchers are betting on a mid-November to early December launch to hit the holiday sales peak. There was no mention of a collector's edition, no preorder bonuses announced, and no confirmation about whether the game will include the morality-based multiple-ending system that defined Metro 2033, Last Light, and Exodus. Given the thematic weight of the story, though, it would be shocking if it did not return.

Also conspicuously absent: any mention of a Nintendo Switch 2 version. 4A Games has not ruled it out, but given the engine's demands, a later port feels far more likely than a day-one release.

Metro 2039 is wishlistable now on Steam and the Epic Games Store, and preorders are expected to open in late summer 2026 once a firm release date is locked in. For now, the wait begins — and if the reveal is anything to go by, it is going to be worth it.
