Monolith's Middle-earth Games Hit Switch 2 on September 30

Aspyr is bringing Shadow of Mordor's Game of the Year Edition and Shadow of War's Definitive Edition to Switch 2 on September 30 as Middle-earth: Shadow Bundle, with pre-orders open at $34.99. It is the first time either game has appeared on a Nintendo platform.

Monolith's Middle-earth Games Hit Switch 2 on September 30

Aspyr has announced Middle-earth: Shadow Bundle for Nintendo Switch 2, a two-game package that brings Monolith Productions' Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor Game of the Year Edition and Middle-earth: Shadow of War Definitive Edition to a Nintendo platform for the first time. It launches September 30, and pre-orders are open now at $34.99 — half off the bundle's $69.99 list price. Both games can also be bought separately.

Two complete editions, not two base games

The distinction matters here, because both of these games have complicated post-launch histories and the bundle takes the tidied-up version of each.

Shadow of Mordor's Game of the Year Edition folds in the Guardians of the Flaming Eye warband mission, the Lord of the Hunt story mission, The Bright Lord story mission, and an assortment of additional warband missions, runes and skins. Lord of the Hunt is the beast-taming detour into Nurnen; The Bright Lord is the one people actually remember, a short campaign that puts you in the boots of Celebrimbor at the moment he takes the One Ring off Sauron's hand.

Shadow of War's Definitive Edition is the bigger lift. It carries the Desolation of Mordor and Blade of Galadriel story expansions, plus the Slaughter Tribe and Outlaw Tribe Nemesis expansions, which add new orc tribes with their own missions, enemies, followers, abilities, weapons, fortress states and legendary gear sets. Desolation of Mordor swaps Talion out entirely for Baranor, a human captain with no wraith powers and no second chances, which turns the game's usual power fantasy into something considerably more careful.

The Definitive Edition is also the version that came after Warner Bros. stripped Shadow of War's real-money market out of the game. The original release let you buy loot chests containing orc followers and gear, a system that sat awkwardly on top of a campaign whose entire hook was earning your army the hard way. Pulling it out meant rebalancing the back half of the game, and the Definitive Edition is where that work landed. Anyone coming to Shadow of War for the first time on Switch 2 gets that version by default.

The Nemesis System is still the reason

Both games are built on the same idea, and it has aged better than almost anything else from their era. The Nemesis System generates orc captains procedurally — name, voice, appearance, personality, strengths, phobias — and then remembers what you do to them. Kill a captain and someone else gets promoted into the gap. Lose to one and he gets stronger, scars over the wound you gave him, and brings it up the next time he catches you. Burn him and survive, and he turns up later with a fire phobia and a grudge.

Shadow of War extended the system upward into fortress sieges, where you spend the back half of the campaign turning captured orcs into a standing army and then throwing that army at Sauron's strongholds. It is the part of the game that most obviously wants a second playthrough, because no two players end up with the same roster of lieutenants or the same set of betrayals.

For Switch 2 owners, that is the practical pitch: two large open-world action games whose systemic hooks generate stories on their own, arriving with every expansion attached, for less than the price of one new release.

A back catalogue from a studio that no longer exists

There is a quieter note underneath the announcement. Monolith Productions, the Kirkland studio that made both games — and, before them, F.E.A.R., No One Lives Forever and Condemned — was shut down by Warner Bros. in early 2025, alongside the cancellation of its long-in-development Wonder Woman project. The Nemesis System remains covered by a Warner Bros. patent, which is part of why no other studio has shipped anything quite like it in the decade since Shadow of Mordor arrived.

That makes the Shadow Bundle a catalogue release in the most literal sense. There is no sequel behind it and no studio left to make one. What Aspyr is porting is the complete, finished version of a two-game series that ended when its developer did.

Aspyr's end of the job

Aspyr is the Austin-based porting house that has spent the last few years shepherding other people's back catalogues onto current hardware: the Tomb Raider I–III and IV–VI Remastered collections, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, and the Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 remasters. Its record on those has been mixed enough that the specifics of this one are worth waiting on — neither Shadow of Mordor nor Shadow of War is a small game to move, and Shadow of War in particular leans hard on holding dozens of individually simulated orc captains in memory at once while a siege is running.

Aspyr has not published performance targets, resolution figures or download sizes for either game, and no gameplay footage of the Switch 2 versions has been shown. Those are the numbers that will decide whether this is the definitive portable version of both games or a compromise, and there is a week between now and launch for them to surface.

Timing

Shadow Bundle arrives September 30 — twelve years to the day after Shadow of Mordor originally launched on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The $34.99 pre-order price is framed as a limited discount, so the practical read is that it goes to $69.99 at some point after launch. Buying the two games individually is an option, but at half price the bundle undercuts almost any split.
