Ten years in, Pokemon GO is about to change what a competitive team looks like. Mega Evolution - locked out of GO Battle League for its entire existence - is being let in, starting with the Twilight Trails season on September 8, 2026. And it arrives alongside a second change that quietly rewrites the damage math for every Mega-capable Pokemon in the game.
Mega Evolution enters GO Battle League
The headline is simple: beginning with Twilight Trails, eligible Mega-Evolved Pokemon can be brought into GO Battle League, and this is not a limited stunt - the change continues into future seasons.
Getting there required solving an obvious balance problem. A Mega-Evolved Pokemon's CP sits far above what the Great and Ultra League caps allow, which is why Megas were never eligible in the first place. The fix is a temporary CP reduction: when you select a Mega-Evolved Pokemon for a GO Battle League team, its CP is automatically scaled down so it fits the Great League: Mega Edition and Ultra League: Mega Edition brackets. The reduction lasts only for the duration of the battle, and the Pokemon returns to its original CP the moment the match ends - so nothing you have invested in gets permanently nerfed.
The season schedule leans on the new format hard. The opening week, September 8 to 15, runs Great, Ultra, and Master League all in Mega Edition, with 4x Stardust from win rewards. Mega Editions then rotate through the rest of the season alongside Willpower Cup, Retro Cup, Little Cup, Fantasy Cup, and a Mega Halloween Cup: Great League Edition that opens October 27. There is even a Mega Color Cup at the end of September.
This is also going competitive at the top level: for the first time in the Pokemon GO Championship Series, Mega-Evolved Pokemon will be eligible at the 2026 Pokemon Latin America International Championships.
The second Charged Attack changes everything
The less-publicised change may matter more. Starting with Pokemon GO Fest 2026: Mega Finale, any Pokemon capable of reaching Super Max Level gains an additional Charged Attack while Mega Evolved - regardless of its current Mega Level.
Two things make that significant. First, the power of those attacks scales with the Pokemon's Mega Level, so the ceiling keeps rising as you invest. Second, they are usable in GO Battle League, which means a Mega can now hold three Charged Attacks: a coverage move, a bait move, and a nuke. In a format built almost entirely around shield-baiting, a third option is not a small buff - it is a different game of rock-paper-scissors.
There is one carve-out: the additional Charged Attack cannot be used in Gym battles against Pokemon defending a Gym. Raids and GO Battle League are fair game. As more Pokemon gain access to Super Max Levels over time, they will pick up the extra Charged Attack too.
Mewtwo gets Adventure Effects
Mewtwo is the showcase for all of this during the Mega Finale. Its two Mega forms each pick up a specific additional Charged Attack:
- Mega Mewtwo X learns Dynamic Punch+
- Mega Mewtwo Y learns Future Sight+
Both moves come with unique Adventure Effects - the out-of-battle utility abilities previously reserved for a handful of legendaries. The important detail is that once Mewtwo unlocks these moves, it can use the Adventure Effects even when it is not Mega Evolved, which makes the investment permanent rather than situational. Unlocking them costs Mega Energy plus the usual resources.
Where it all lands
Pokemon GO Fest 2026: Mega Finale runs from Monday, August 31 at 10:00 a.m. through Friday, September 4 at 11:59 p.m. local time, with wild encounters and Mega Raids built around the featured Mega-Evolved Pokemon. Armored Mewtwo also returns during the event.
GO Battle League: Twilight Trails then starts Tuesday, September 8 at 1:00 p.m. PDT. End-of-season rewards land on the Battle screen at that point, and every rank resets - so if you have been sitting on a Mega you have never had a use for outside raids, the timing is unusually good.
Mega Chesnaught, Mega Delphox, and Mega Greninja made their sudden debut in San Francisco during the World Championships, and the team is folding that reveal directly into the new season's framing. Pokemon GO is free to play on iOS and Android.
