Serious Sam: Shatterverse has a date. Devolver Digital and developer Behaviour Interactive dropped a release date trailer on August 7 confirming the co-op roguelite shooter arrives August 31 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That is a three-week runway from announcement to launch, which is short enough to feel like confidence.
Shatterverse was first shown at the Xbox Partner Preview back in March, timed to the series' 25th anniversary. The pitch has not changed since: up to five players take control of alternate-dimension versions of Serious Sam and fight through a multiverse that Mental has, predictably, made a mess of. What has changed is that it now has a date sitting in one of the emptier stretches of the release calendar.

A roguelite that still feels like Serious Sam
The structural change here is the roguelite loop. Runs move through hand-crafted arenas that shuffle procedurally rather than fully generated levels, so the encounters keep the deliberate sightlines and choke points the series has always used to funnel a hundred enemies at you at once. Between fights you stack boons and apply run modifiers that bend the rules, which is where the build variety lives.
That is a meaningful bet. Serious Sam's identity has never been about level design surprises - it is about a fixed arsenal, open arenas, and the horde-management arithmetic of deciding which of the twelve things running at you dies first. Layering roguelite progression on top of that is a natural fit, and the arsenal reflects it: classic weapons alongside new experimental options that presumably only exist in whichever reality you happen to be shooting through this run.

Five players, cross-platform
Five-player co-op is an odd number, and a good one. It is one more than the four-player standard most co-op shooters settle on, which changes how the arena fills up and how much space each player actually gets. Devolver has confirmed cross-platform multiplayer, so the pool is not fragmented between PC and console - important for a game whose whole appeal is filling a lobby.
The game also supports solo play, if you want the classic experience of being the only person standing between Mental's forces and everything else.
Behaviour, with Croteam's blessing
Shatterverse is developed by Behaviour Interactive - best known for Dead by Daylight - rather than by Croteam, the studio that has made every mainline Serious Sam game since 2001. Croteam signed off on it, and the multiverse framing is a tidy way to hand the series to a new team without stepping on the established canon: every Sam is a valid Sam.
Behaviour has been quietly running multiplayer playtests in the run-up to launch, with Devolver posting about them as recently as August 9. That is not nothing for a co-op game shipping in three weeks - the difference between a good horde shooter and a bad one is usually netcode and matchmaking, not the guns.
August 31, and a crowded September
The date choice is worth noting. August 31 puts Shatterverse at the tail end of a month that has been unusually quiet for major releases, and just ahead of a September that is not. Landing there gives it a clear weekend before the autumn calendar opens up - and for a co-op game that lives or dies on how many people are playing it in week one, that timing matters more than it would for a single-player release.
Serious Sam: Shatterverse launches August 31 on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, including Xbox Cloud Gaming.
