Oblivion Remastered Hits Switch 2 on August 11 - and Bethesda Put the Whole Game on the Cartridge

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered arrives on Nintendo Switch 2 tomorrow, August 11 - the first time any version of Oblivion has appeared on a Nintendo console in the game's twenty-year history. The more interesting detail is what Bethesda is putting on the cartridge.

The whole game, actually on the cartridge

The $59.99 physical edition ships complete on the cartridge. No day-one download, no key-in-a-box, no 40GB install before you can leave the sewers. That has become genuinely rare on Switch 2, where a growing number of third-party physical releases are game-key cards or partial installs, and it is the single loudest thing about this port.

The digital version is $49.99, ten dollars cheaper, which is the inverse of how physical editions usually work and a fairly direct statement about what Bethesda thinks the cartridge is worth. Both versions include the full package: Shivering Isles, Knights of the Nine, and every other DLC pack.

What it actually runs like

Bethesda has been upfront about the targets rather than leaving them to be discovered on launch day. Oblivion Remastered runs at 900p in handheld and 1080p docked, both at 30 frames per second, with DLSS doing the reconstruction work.

Thirty frames is the honest number for an Unreal Engine 5 remaster on this hardware, and stating it in advance is the right call. This is the same remaster that shipped on PC and other consoles in April 2025 - Cyrodiil rebuilt in UE5 with the original game's systems, quest structure and famously freeform NPC scheduling left intact underneath the new lighting and geometry. It is not a remake, and it never pretended to be.

Why this port matters more than most

Oblivion is a game about wandering, getting distracted, and losing four hours to a side quest you found by accident. That is the exact shape of play that portable hardware is best at, and it is the reason a handheld version of a 2006 open-world RPG is a more compelling proposition than a handheld version of most 2026 releases. The remaster's UE5 layer means it looks modern enough to justify a screen you hold six inches from your face, while the underlying design is old enough that 30fps is not a compromise anyone will feel.

Bethesda has been promoting the launch with a run of short character-focused clips - Sheogorath's Deja Vu trailer landed August 4, and the studio has kept posting Oblivion material through QuakeCon week, including a nod to the Lucky Old Lady statue in Bravil. It is a marketing beat aimed squarely at people who already know what those references mean.

The details

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered launches on Nintendo Switch 2 on August 11, 2026. Digital is $49.99, physical is $59.99 with the full game on cartridge. All DLC is included in both. Pre-orders are live now on the Nintendo eShop.
