Bethesda's space RPG arrives on PlayStation 5 alongside the massive Free Lanes update featuring seamless space travel and the new Terran Armada story expansion.

Starfield Launches on PS5 April 7th With Free Lanes Update and Terran Armada DLC

After nearly three years as a Microsoft exclusive, Starfield officially launches on PlayStation 5 on April 7th, and it's bringing some serious luggage. Bethesda Game Studios isn't just porting the base game — it's rolling out the Free Lanes update and the Terran Armada story DLC simultaneously, making this arguably the definitive way to experience the game for the first time.

The Free Lanes update is the headliner for existing players and newcomers alike. The most significant change is the introduction of Cruise Mode, which finally lets players fly between planets within a star system without hitting a loading screen every time. It's the kind of seamless space traversal that many felt was missing at launch, and Bethesda has clearly been listening. The update also adds an autopilot function, expanded ship customization options, new gear crafting systems, and a new companion to recruit.

For PS5 specifically, Bethesda has done meaningful work with the DualSense controller. Adaptive triggers shift resistance based on the weapon you're firing, the light bar tracks your health and ship integrity in real time, and the touchpad allows quick switching between first and third person. Players can choose between a 4K Visuals mode at 30 FPS or a Performance mode targeting 60 FPS, with PS5 Pro owners getting enhanced fidelity in both modes.

The paid Terran Armada expansion adds a full new storyline involving humanity's first contact with a hostile alien fleet, featuring new quest lines, weapons, and ship types. It's included in the Premium Edition ($69.99), while the Standard Edition comes in at $49.99 — reflecting the game's recent price adjustment across all platforms.

Starfield space exploration

Pre-loading is available starting April 5th, with the download weighing in at approximately 135 GB. Whether you're a PlayStation player experiencing Bethesda's space RPG for the first time or a returning explorer ready for Free Lanes, April 7th is shaping up to be a landmark day for Starfield.
