Arc System Works has put a date on the first fighter of MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls' Year 1 Pass. Phoenix Cyclops joins the 4v4 tag fighter on November 2 on PS5 and PC, with Ray Chase voicing him. Two extra costumes, called Classic and Legacy, go on sale the same day. The announcement also comes with two things you can use right now: the game's first discount on PlayStation Store, and a three-hour PlayStation Plus Game Trial that let subscribers try the full game from October 7.
Why this Cyclops is on fire
Cyclops was first revealed as the season's lead character back in July, but producer Takeshi Yamanaka has now explained why the team didn't ship the familiar visor-and-jumpsuit version. In his words, Cyclops has turned up in so many Marvel fighting games that his look and move set feel set in stone, so the team looked for a take that would feel new. The narrative team suggested drawing on the Phoenix Force, and the studio says it kept working on him until it felt he added something to that long fighting-game history. That extra time is why he's arriving as post-launch DLC rather than on the launch roster.
The source is the Avengers vs. X-Men storyline, where Scott Summers became one of the Phoenix Five and ended up absorbing his teammates' share of the cosmic power. Arc System Works describes this Scott as someone who believes in absolute justice and will take extreme action to save mutantkind, while carrying the weight of those choices. To bring out that conflict, the designers deliberately made him look younger than usual, a contrast to the overwhelming Phoenix aura around him. The red-and-gold costume follows the comics closely but adds touches of the team's own. Yamanaka sums up the goal simply: make him look as cool as possible.

How he plays: Optic Blasts, Solar Shards and Dark Phoenix
On the move list, Cyclops is pitched as an all-rounder. His Optic Blasts reach across the whole screen but also carry close-range strikes, and they sit alongside rushdown tools, throws and set-up moves. The Phoenix Force gives him wide fire attacks that cover large areas of the stage, so his zoning isn't limited to one straight beam.
The core of the kit is a resource system. Each Optic Blast he lands builds Phoenix Force energy as Solar Shards. Once he has four, Cyclops can transform into his Dark Phoenix form, a temporary but large power boost. The power isn't free: the form brings risks that include draining his own health. That tension is the point. The Phoenix Force is written as both his greatest strength and a path to self-destruction, and Arc System Works expects that handling it well will decide matches. In practice, that means picking the right moment to cash in four shards rather than transforming as soon as the meter fills.
For a 4v4 tag game, a character who builds toward a timed transformation raises obvious team-building questions: who to pair him with and when to tag him in. Players will start finding those answers once he's out.
Classic and Legacy costumes for the purists
Arc System Works admits that making the Phoenix version the default would disappoint fans who grew up with a different Cyclops, from the comics or the animated series. That's the stated reason for the Classic and Legacy costumes launching alongside him, and the studio says it will take the same approach whenever it heavily reinterprets a character or picks a lesser-known version. In other words, a more traditional look should follow whenever a roster pick goes unconventional.

First sale and a free trial right now
The more immediate news is for anyone who hasn't bought the game yet. MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls launched on August 6, almost exactly two months ago, and its first PlayStation Store sale started on October 7. The Ultimate Edition is part of the discount. PlayStation Plus members can also play a three-hour Game Trial of the full game from the same date, which is a low-risk way to try the tag system and Arcadia Rumble before Cyclops arrives.
The timing looks deliberate: a sale and a trial now give lapsed and curious players a few weeks to learn the basics before the first new fighter lands.
Play him first at EVO France
Anyone heading to EVO France from October 9 to 11 can try Phoenix Cyclops before everyone else at the MARVEL Tōkon booth. That makes it the first public hands-on with the character, so expect the first tech and combo discoveries to surface over that weekend, more than three weeks before he goes live for everyone on November 2.
