Aniimo Is Deleting Its Rune System and Its Legendary RNG Before Launch - Mobile Lands September 23

Pawprint Studio's pre-launch dev letter confirms Aniimo has removed the Rune system entirely and replaced its random Legendary catch with a craftable, guaranteed one-time Irisalis encounter, alongside flat Prismana odds, Umbral Aniimo, an expanded Home and rebuilt mobile controls. Aniimo launches September 16 on PC, console and Xbox Cloud Gaming, with iOS and Android following September 23.

Aniimo Is Deleting Its Rune System and Its Legendary RNG Before Launch - Mobile Lands September 23

Most free-to-play creature collectors spend the weeks before launch adding systems. Pawprint Studio has spent them deleting them. In a lengthy dev letter posted ahead of Aniimo's release, the studio confirmed it has cut the Rune system entirely and torn out the random-catch loop around its first Legendary creature — two of the most-complained-about mechanics from the game's third beta.

Aniimo launches worldwide on PC, console and Xbox Cloud Gaming on September 16. The iOS and Android version follows on September 23.

Catching a wild Aniimo in the open world of Idyll

Runes are gone, not rebalanced

The Rune system was the game's stat-boosting equipment layer, and it carried the genre's most familiar tax: random slots, random rolls, and a grind that scaled with how much you cared about competitive play. Pawprint's letter does not soften it. "The Carried Item system has been simplified: random rune slots are gone, and the rune system has been removed entirely."

Several other training changes land alongside it. Legendary Star Dust output is up. Capability Awakening on any Aniimo below level 60 can now be reset at any time, with the training items returned rather than consumed. Capability caps unlock gradually as an Aniimo levels and gains Resonance star rank, instead of being a wall at the start. And Capafruit effects now transfer automatically between Aniimo during inheritance — meaning switching which creature you raise no longer costs you the entire investment you already made.

That last one is the quietly important change for a mobile audience. In a game with hundreds of creatures, a system that punishes you for changing your mind is a system that punishes experimentation.

The Legendary catch is no longer a slot machine

The other big cut is Irisalis, the game's first Legendary Aniimo. In beta, catching it meant paying an entry cost, entering an encounter, and throwing Anipod after Anipod hoping the roll landed. Testers hated it, and the studio agrees with them in writing:

"Throwing ball after ball got dull fast, and stacking the entry cost and repeated throws on top of pure luck turned a legendary encounter into a draining chore. We'd hoped randomness would make meeting a Legendary Aniimo feel like a challenge — but we'd overlooked some players' experiences."

The replacement removes RNG from the outcome altogether. You collect legendary tokens through ordinary world exploration and story progress, craft your own Legendary Aniipod, and unlock Irisalis's exclusive story. Once the Aniipod exists, a one-time encounter appears on the map: fight the Legendary, follow the story, throw the Aniipod you made, and the bond is sealed. It happens once, and it cannot fail.

Pawprint says this is now the template for every future Legendary Aniimo, which effectively rules out the pity-timer-and-pray structure that a lot of this game's competition uses for its rarest units.

Shiny hunting, reworked

Prismana Aniimo — the game's rare-variant creatures — got the most technical overhaul in the letter, and it is all in the direction of predictability:

An Umbral Aniimo, one of the Perfect Potential variants added for launch

Homes, controls and the mobile-specific fixes

The Home — Aniimo's base-building layer — has expanded from a single RV into a multi-area map with house building and a much larger furniture catalogue. Furniture groups can be shared by code, some pieces can be placed out in the open world, and unused furniture can be sold back through the Co-op Store at a discount. Home Aniimo have new idle behaviours, better work logic and a petting interaction. RV dispatches can now return eggs carrying the Prismana trait, and there is a new social interaction where you till the soil at another Pathfinder's Home to earn a cut of their harvest.

For the September 23 mobile launch specifically, Pawprint lists improved controls on mobile devices and with controllers, multi-language voiceover added to the main story, and improved translation quality across all languages. Journey quest guidance has been rebuilt to fix vague objectives and progression blockers — the sort of thing that reads as housekeeping on PC and as a retention problem on a phone.

What Aniimo actually is

For anyone coming to it fresh: Aniimo is a free-to-play open-world creature-collecting RPG set on a continent called Idyll, where you play a Pathfinder who does not merely command creatures but can Twine with them — joining their families, fighting alongside them, and seeing the world through their senses. The studio's framing in the letter is that it wanted the joy of discovery rather than a checklist: "It felt like we were discovering them," Pawprint writes of designing the creatures.

Whether that survives contact with a live-service calendar is the open question. But a developer that arrives at launch having removed its equipment gacha layer and its legendary RNG, rather than added a second one, is at least starting from an unusual place. The mobile build lands on September 23 — a week after everyone else, and with the benefit of a week of live-service post-mortems to read first.
