Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen is out now. Capcom's first and only major expansion for its 2024 open-world RPG went live overnight on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and the Switch 2 version of Dragon's Dogma 2 launched alongside it with the expansion already in the box. On Steam the add-on costs $29.99. A free Title Update 4.0 for the base game dropped at the same time, so even players who never buy the expansion have a reason to boot the game back up this weekend.
What Dark Arisen adds
The name is a deliberate echo. The original Dragon's Dogma got its own Dark Arisen re-release in 2013, built around Bitterblack Isle, a dungeon that became the part of the game many fans remember best. The sequel's version takes a different shape. Rather than one cursed island, it opens a whole new region in the frozen north called the Forsaken Dominion of Norgan, with its own story and a loop Capcom describes as a loot-driven relic expedition: push into ruined settlements, fight what lives there and bring back rare finds.

Norgan also carries a side-quest chain with a payoff that players of the base game have asked for since 2024. Finish it and you unlock a way to change how weapons and armour found in Norgan look, borrowing the appearance of other gear while keeping the original stats. It is a transmog system in all but name, though Capcom has tied it to the new region's equipment rather than the whole wardrobe.
Twelve Lost Rites across the old map
Not all of the new content sits up north. The expansion scatters 12 dungeon challenges called the Lost Rites across Vermund and Battahl, the two kingdoms of the base game. Each is overseen by a figure called the Pathfinder and holds equipment that once belonged to earlier Arisen, which gives returning players a reason to revisit familiar ground instead of heading straight for the snow.

New hairstyles and tattoos have also been added to the Character Creator, available right away for both your Arisen and your Main Pawn. And Capcom has refreshed the roster of Official Pawns, companions designed by streamers and creators that you can recruit through the Rift. The first new batch includes three characters from the Capcom Collectibles video series.
Title Update 4.0 is free for everyone
The base game update is arguably the bigger deal for the millions who already own Dragon's Dogma 2. Title Update 4.0 adds a Hard Mode that can be switched on for an existing save or a new one, and an option to restart the game at any time using the same save data.
On PC, the update adds FSR 3 Frame Generation and DLSS 4.5 Dynamic Multi Frame Generation. Performance on PC was the base game's sorest point in 2024, especially in its crowded cities, and Capcom has been chipping away at it in patches since. Players who left early will also find several earlier additions waiting: six equippable weapon skills instead of four, and an Eternal Ferrystone that makes fast travel easier for anyone who wants it, without forcing it on those who prefer to walk.

Switch 2 gets the whole thing
Dark Arisen is also the day Dragon's Dogma 2 arrives on Nintendo's console. On Switch 2 the game is sold only as a single package with the base game and the expansion together, while PS5, Xbox and PC owners buy the expansion separately as an add-on.
For newcomers on any platform, Capcom has released a recap video narrated by Ron Perlman that runs through the series' premise before jumping in. Dark Arisen requires the base game on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and is available now on the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store and Steam.
